About this ebook
Charlie laughed. “I was institutionalized a few times.”
“Insane asylum.”
“A hospital. They say that I was wired wrong. They put me on different drugs trying to set me right. Sometimes they worked. For a while. Sometimes they didn’t work at all.”
They were silent for some time.
“What’s it like to be crazy?”
Charlie glanced at the boy. “It’s scary. One day you feel like Napoleon. Like you could conquer the world. Then you wake up. On the battlefield. After the armies have left. And all you can smell is dead bodies. And you’re one of them.”
Mackenzie nodded. “I know the feeling.”
“You remind me of someone I knew when I was a kid, kid.”
“And who would that be?”
“Me.” Charlie put his hand on the boy’s shoulder and squeezed. “Why don’t we go over and bowl a game?”

1.The Zig Zag
He’s driving me nuts, Frank.
Harry took a salt shaker and sprinkled some salt in his beer. Salt fell on the table. Harry threw some over his shoulder.
Don’t ask me, Harry.
Frank glanced over at the bar where a blonde sat nursing her drink. Monique would go ballistic.
He won’t stop talking, Frank. 24 7. I’m not used to having someone living with me. And when it’s Charlie, it’s like living with a mob. He’s coming at you from every direction. I need silence, Frank. If I’ve got a book open, Charlie wants to know what I’m reading. If I’m reading a piece in a magazine, Charlie expects a summary of the article. I don’t know how his brain is wired. Charlie won’t stay on any one topic long enough for you to understand what the hell he’s talking about. I don’t think that there is a point to any conversation he begins. It’s all random memory recall. How many times do I have to listen to that Abbot and Costello routine, Who’s on first? I don’t give a damn who’s on second. What’s on second. I don’t give a damn who’s on second. Who’s on first? Exactly.
Harry smacked his forehead with the palm of his hand. Frank smiled. The blonde at the bar brushed her hair off her shoulder and glanced over at their table. Frank smiled. The blonde returned the smile, then turned back to the bartender and her drink.
That blonde has one nice tush.
Frank sighed.
Harry turned and looked at the bar.
She’s a hooker,
he said.
Frank shook his head. Jack doesn’t allow hookers to work his place. Bad for business.
Frank sipped his beer. God, it was so much easier when I was single. If you saw an available young woman in a bar, you could go up and talk to her. Maybe get lucky. Never made you feel guilty.
Harry glanced back at the blonde and then at Frank.
You been listening to anything I said, Frank?
Of course.
Frank looked up from his drink to Harry. He glanced over at the bar. God, I’m horny.
We weren’t talking about your sex drive,
Harry responded.
Frank smiled. You are a beautiful man when you’re angry, Harry.
Oh, fuck off,
Harry muttered.
Okay, Harry, You’ve been telling me what a pain in the ass, Charlie is. I’m still horny. Think I could get lucky?
Harry shook his head then raised his glass to his mouth. He glanced over at the blonde.
You hated being single, Frank.
Frank thought for a moment. You’re right, Harry. That’s what I used to say. I hated being single. Now I hate being married. The trouble is, I’ve run out of options.
You could become a priest like Tom.
Frank scratched his head and smiled, conceding Harry’s remark. He glanced back at the bar. The blonde slid off her stool and walked slowly toward the jukebox. She bent over slowly and put a coin in the slot. A tear of sweat rolled down Frank’s forehead.
Now, that’s just criminal,
he muttered.
She knows you’re watching her.
Frank looked at Harry. How do you know that?
Harry reached for another beer. "I got a nose for disasters. Like you giving that blonde the once over. You know you’re not going to act on your inclinations. You’ve already got enough
