A Murder of Scarecrows
When Wilson Kendrick woke to the subtle yet distinct thump in the middle of the night he threw aside the sheets and pattered across the chilled hardwood floor toward the window. He expected to see the Saundersons arriving home late from one of their semi-regular family trips to Maine; or perhaps the driver of a car stalled on the stretch of Highway 7 adjacent to his property.
What he saw in the pale moonlight, instead, were a dozen people scattered about the vast lawn, completely still and unmoving.
Squinting to make out details through the foggy darkness, he changed his mind.
It wasn’t a group of people, it was a group of scarecrows.
No, not a group. The term commonly used for a group of crows came to mind.
It was a murder of scarecrows.
A shudder crawled up the base of his spine and cumulated in the reflexive shirking of his shoulder blades.
He stood at the window, not sure what he was going to do; uncertain what a person should do in such a circumstance.
He bided his time by squinting through the window and counting the still, silent sentinels in his yard.
There were thirteen of them.
Deciding he wasn’t going to be able to get back to sleep, he took off his pyjamas and pulled on the pair of jeans and the neatly pressed t-shirt laid out on the trunk at the end of his bed.
Fully dressed, he walked back to the window to do another head count.
One, two, three . . .
he counted quietly under his breath, his thin boney finger tapping the window pane as he moved it about pinpointing each still figure in the crosshairs of his vision. . . . thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen.
Sixteen?
Something was wrong. He could see himself miscounting by one or two perhaps, but not by three.
He turned around and opened his bedside drawer for the pad of paper and a pencil which he kept to jot down his dreams whenever he woke in the middle of the
