A Dark Horse Poem Book - Allison Rainne

    Alive

    ––––––––

    I won’t live for you

    To control me

    Puppet on a string

    I will not be

    ––––––––

    This life is my own

    Heed my warning

    Perfect as you are

    I don’t need you

    I may not be sure

    Where I’m going

    But I’ll always know

    Where I’ve been

    ––––––––

    Without you I’ve lived

    True to myself

    I will die alone

    Before giving in

    Alone

    ––––––––

I let my mind wander into the music in my ears

I close my eyes and pretend I am there at a concert

With all my friends smiling, laughing having fun

    I’m not alone

    ––––––––

The song is over and I open my eyes to pick another song

before this feeling is gone and I am sad again

the screen is blank and I realize the battery is dead

    I’m alone again

    ––––––––

I sit wondering if anyone would see me when they passed

Would they see me as a person sitting here

Or would they just walk into me as if I didn’t exist

    I feel alone

    Amy

    ––––––––

    Walking home

    dark of night

    trees bending

    with the wind

    something in the air

    unsettling

    Amy quickens her pace

    she turns to look

    sees no one

    feels a presence

    a dog barks

Amy takes off in a run

    then stops to laugh

    no one is there

    still she can feel someone

    almost breathing on her

the hair on her neck stands up

    again, she runs

    almost home and safe

    it's darker out than
