She can't eat, she can't sleep and she's afraid of the dark. Brad takes her to see his doctor where she learns she is pregnant.

However, unknown to them, Dracula has followed them to Seattle and begins a series of killings, feeding off his victims  until he can find Nadia.

After several young panhandlers are killed and drained of their blood, Jake Martin, private eye, becomes involved searching for the killer. At first he is reluctant to believe it was Dracula doing the killing, but after a visit to the morgue, he changes his mind.

When Brad leaves on a business trip to California, he hires a Maria Sanchez to stay with Nadia. As Nadia returns from the grocery store, Maria falls from the sky and lands on her hood, her throat ripped out. Nadia rushes into the house, but Dracula beats her inside. As she is calling 911 to report Maria's death, Dracula appears. Before she can escape out the door, Dracula captures her and takes her to his lair.

Jake, a regular at the Blue Star Lounge, gets a call from Maria's brother. They work out a deal and Jake takes on the case to find her killer in exchange for his bar bill.

Blood Born - Dr. Ira May

    CHAPTER 1

    **

A wall of thick, soupy fog drifted in from Puget Sound engulfing the Seattle skyline. Heavy dark clouds rapidly obscured white light from a full moon.

Nadia pushed aside the tree limbs that blocked her path as she made her way through the dark woods. Strange sounds filled the night air and in the distance, a wolf howled venting its pain. Nadia stopped, looked around and then quickly picked up her pace as the darkness enveloped her like a veil at a funeral.

From out of nowhere, a bat descended from above and became entangled in her hair. Fear filled her eyes as she screamed, reached up, grabbed the creature, and hurled it to the ground. The bat’s glowing red eyes fluttered in the dark

She spun and ran blindly through the forest, oblivious to the pain induced by the briars and thorns that ripped at her skin. With every step she took, she turned and looked back searching for the creature. Tripping over the unearthed roots of a tree, she tumbled head over heels down a leaf-covered slope right into a creek bed. With her heart pounding in her chest like it was going to explode, she pushed herself up from the icy water. Breathless, and still kneeling on her hands and knees, she searched the sky for the bat and looked over at the embankment down which she had just fallen.

She stood, lifted her skirt and moved hastily toward the far side of the shore constantly looking back. Before she could exit the creek, the bat appeared above her. She screamed, turned, and ran splashing through the icy cold water. Stumbling over her own feet, she slipped and fell on the moss-covered rocks that lined the stream.

The bat, with its eyes glowing red, quickly descended upon her and took the form of Prince Vlad Dracula. He knelt next to her in the shallow brook and took her hand. Have no fear my lovely, I have come to give you eternal life. He pulled her close and sank his fangs into her soft white neck. Blood spurted out staining the water red as she writhed in pain. Help me. Please, someone help me.

Brad, lying in bed beside Nadia, reached over and shook her. Nadia. Nadia. Wake up. You’re dreaming.

Nadia, still half-asleep, opened her eyes and began struggling with him, attempting to fend him off. Brad grasped her by the shoulders. Nadia, it’s all right. Calm down. You’re safe. You’re at home with me. Wake up.

With her eyes still filled with fear, she sat up and wrapped her arms around him. Oh, Brad. It was so real. I could feel his fangs sink into my neck and smell his hot breath.

It was just another dream about Dracula, sweetie. A flashback, he said as he wiped the cold sweat that drenched her face. Try to go back to sleep.

I’m afraid to go to sleep, she said as light from a full moon filtered through the window and illuminated her tired face.

It’s okay. No one will hurt you. I’m right here.

Her eyelids grew heavy as she layed down beside him and turned on her side. Brad wrapped his arm around her waist and within a few minutes, they both fell asleep.

Later that night, rain, blowing hard against the bedroom window, awakened Nadia. Still laying on her side, she heard a noise and listened intently. The wind beckoned to her like a whisper. She took a deep sighing breath and closed her eyes, but before she could go back to sleep, she heard another loud noise. She turned over toward Brad to wake him, but he was gone. The loud noises increased. She bolted from the bed and picked up a baseball bat from behind the door. Her heart pounded in her throat and every nerve was on edge as she raised the bat and cautiously stepped toward the balcony. Holding the bat in one hand, she pulled the curtains back and peered outside. Is someone there?

Lightning flashed illuminating a shadowy figure on the deck. She held the bat tightly with both hands and raised it higher. I’m calling the police, she yelled.

She reached out, grasped the brass handle and yanked the French doors open. Wind whipped at the curtains causing them to flutter in the breeze. Bright flashes of lightning revealed nothing but an empty deck. Nervously, Nadia stepped outside into the rain. Holding the baseball bat firmly in her grip, she was ready to strike out at whatever or whoever was there. From behind, a hand grasped her shoulder. She jumped, screamed and swung the bat wildly.

Whoa there, said Brad as he ducked. You just about took my head off. What are you doing?

Drenched from the blinding rain and tightly clutching the bat, she stared at him. He was here.

He blinked his eyes as the rain dripped off his face. Who was here?

    Dracula. I saw him.

Brad held his hand in front of his eyes, shielding his face from the rain and howling wind. I’m sure it was just another dream.

No. I wasn't dreaming. I saw him standing out here on our balcony.

Lightning flashed casting a shadow of a tree across the deck. He pointed toward the tree. This is what you saw. It was just a shadow.

Nadia narrowed her eyes. No. It was a man, not a tree. It was Dracula I’m telling you. He has found us.

Brad put his arm around her shoulders. Let’s go inside and get you out of this rain.

As they stepped inside, he closed the balcony doors and turned the lock. Well, whatever it was, it can’t bother you now.

Where were you? she asked as he pried the bat from her hands and put it back behind the door.

I was thirsty. I went downstairs to get something to drink.

Nadia's body shivered in the cold. Brad wrapped his arms around her. You're freezing. You need to change out of these wet clothes.

She nodded her head and walked into the bathroom. After she removed her night gown and hung it on a hook behind the door, she sat on a stool with a towel wrapped around her pale body. Brad entered the bathroom, grabbed the hair dryer
