The Ghost Train - Shantnu Tiwari

    1

Have I ever told you about the time I almost died?

It happened when I tried to board the ghost train almost twenty years ago.

Due to reasons that will become clear soon, I have not told this story to anyone. Until now.

This story will be published after my death, so the secrets it contains will not affect anyone, living or dead. Yes, I only have a few more months to live, months I plan to use to set my affairs in order, create my will so that my children get what they deserve, and finally finish my story.

I have been trying to write this story for the last twenty years. But no matter how many times I tried, no matter how many times I sat down at my desk with a pen and paper, I could not write even a single word. It was like the ghost train itself was stopping me from writing. And as you read this story, you will come to realise that this is not such a surprising fact. Even though it has been twenty years, the ghost train still has an influence on me. An influence that is not just otherworldly, but profoundly spiritual as well. Spiritual, you ask? How can a train be spiritual? The answer is the train itself wasn’t spiritual, but the experience it gave me made me spiritual. Being so close to death will do that to you.

You may not believe that; you may even laugh at my backwardness, my propensity to believe in superstition and my inability to believe in science. Laugh all you want. Being so close to death has given me a new perspective on life. I now understand many things I did not understand that cold October night twenty years ago when I first saw the ghost train.

And so, as I sit here, a much older but not wiser man, I think about the actions of that day and wonder if I could have done something different. But the more I think about it, the more I must conclude that my actions were driven by fate. Well perhaps, not fate. I am not superstitious. I believe that we make our own destiny (and live with the consequences), but I still believe that the universe as a whole, the people we associate with, the company we keep, all have an influence on us. Maybe that is why the older, more wiser people’s advice is to be careful of the company we keep. I wish I had listened to that advice and not laughed at the old man, my uncle, when he warned me to be careful of the friends I chose.

But I am short of time and I’m sure so are you. You do not have time to hear me ramble on and on about how the times have changed, or how the young don’t respect their elders anymore, or how everything is more expensive now. I will not ramble at you like a grumpy old man in a clichéd book. I know why you picked up this story. You want to read about the ghost train. And so, I will tell you all about it.

Here is my story, my foolish adventure, on board the ghost train.

Let me warn you though: You may be reading this book to find out where the ghost train stops. You might want to get on the train yourself, in a misguided sense of adventure, or for fun, or for thrills. But let me assure you, I will give you no idea of where or when the train runs. Sure, you can find that out on your own, and I will not stop you.

But I will warn you that you will not like what you find. At least read my story to the end to find out what you should expect, before doing anything as hasty or foolish as I did. If you still want to be foolish and still risk your life, in spite of all the advice I give you, go right ahead. I was a strong-headed young fool once, so I’m in no position to judge you.

The fact that you picked up this book tells me that you too, have heard of the ghost train. Rumours about it have been going around for hundreds of years. Yes, I said hundreds of years. I first heard rumours about a ghost train in an ancient book written in 1840; yes, that was soon after the first steam engines had started running in England. You might wonder how the rumours of a
