My Neighbors are Vampires - A. M. Tanti
CHAPTER ONE
Nathan dropped his book on his bed in triumph. The new neighbours were vampires and he knew it. He could even prove it. He grabbed his notepad off his bedside table and started scribbling a list;
They never went outside in daylight.
They were PALE.
He never saw them bring in groceries.
All the curtains were always shut.
They were just weird.
He looked his list over and nodded. He would add more stuff to his list later. He had to get to sleep now, it was the first day of school tomorrow and he couldn’t afford to be tired. Satisfied with himself he turned his light off, turned over and went to sleep.
Could Social Studies be anymore boring. Mr. Reynollds just kept droning on and on. All Nathan could hear after the first ten minutes was Blah blah blah and Yadda yadda yadda and La la la. God, it had to end soon. Nathan jumped as the bell rang and was out the door in seconds just like everyone else. He met his friend Max at their lockers and was headed down the school steps minutes afterwards.
So what are your new neighbours like? You still think they’re weirdos?
Max asked as they headed towards home.
I’m sure they’re Vampires dude. They never come out during the day, get groceries. The windows are always shut. They’re blood suckers I know it. I just gotta tell mom before she goes getting all ‘Welcome to the neighbourhood, come over for dinner and shit’ You know how she is, all friends and crap. I don’t get how she can make friends with everyone. Another reason I’m sure I’m adopted. She trusts everyone and I don’t trust anyone.
Nathan grumbled to his best friend as they walked.
Marjorie Smythe made friends easily and fast nowadays. She was social, outspoken and a genuine pleasure to be around. Her son no the other hand was the complete opposite. He trusted no one and liked others even less. It was like he had a built in danger detector, and it was always telling him something was wrong. If he spoke two words to you after meeting you, consider yourself lucky and leave it at that.
Max chuckled and smacked his friend on the shoulder. Dude, is there anyone you even trust?
Nathan stopped walking and looked around blinking. He turned to his friend, his face serious, Currently, I trust you, my mom and Dr. Johanson. That’s it, right now I think. No one else has proved themselves to me.
Max nodded sadly. After your dad passed, getting you to trust someone new has been almost impossible. I get it though. You feel like you have to protect you and your mom from everything and everyone. In your place I wouldn’t trust anyone either. It’s cool. I’m just glad you trust me.
You’re my brother Max. Ofcoarse I trust you. How’s it going with the se current Foster Parents? They good?
Nathan asked and started walking again.
They’re okay, no dramas anyway and I get to stay in my neighbourhood and finish school here. Only two terms left and I’m done. I’ll be eighteen before then anyway. Sux being one of the oldest in classes though. Guess that’s what happens when your bio mum decides to homeschool you but is too messed up to do it right. Not that I’m holding grudges, or anything.
Max finished sarcastically as he ducked the elbow to the ribs Nathan had aimed at him. They both stopped to laugh at each other for a couple of minutes. Neither of their situations was idyll, but they made the best of it and moved on.
Okay bro. See you tomorrow. I’m off to try and save my mom from making friends with the local vamps,
Nathan said minutes later, as they sobered up. He peeled off down his own street while Max kept walking to the next block. The two had met the first day of high school when Max had tripped over Nathan’s school bag and become blood brothers by the end of the day. That had been over six years ago and the friendship had never waned.
Nathan jumped over the short front gate of his house and sauntered up the path to the front door. He fished his keys out of his pocket and unlocked it calling out Mom, I’m home!
as he always did. He threw his bag onto the sofa when he walked past on his way into the kitchen looking for both food and mother, not necessarily in that order. As usual she was at the counter. He’d barely sat down before a plate of sandwiches were in front of him along with a tall glass of apple juice.
He leaned over the counter to kiss her cheek quickly before taking his first bite. He hummed happy approval as last night's roast beef met his tongue.
His mother chuckled Glad you like it. So how was the first day of term back at school?
she asked as she leant on the counter and snagged herself half a roast beef and salad sandwich to nibble on as she watched her son devour the rest.
Nathan swallowed before answering Boring, the usual. Same teachers, same classes, same kids. Only interesting thing was Miss Evans announced she was pregnant and would be taking leave closer to the end of the year, but most of us already figured that out. There was no way she could hide the morning sickness last term and now she’s showing. I’m happy for her. She really wanted a baby, even if the father was an a hole and walked out, it's his loss. Miss Evans is cool. Some of the kids might end up saying some stupid stuff though. Especially the religious crowd. Hey mom listen, before I forget or you go off and be nice or anything. Don’t go and be friendly and stuff with the new neighbours next door. I can’t really prove it yet but there’s something wrong with them. I think they're Vampires. Before you tell me I’m being stupid just listen. They never go out in daylight, they never go grocery shopping, the curtains are always closed, they’re too pale and I’m sure there’s more stuff I just haven’t figured out yet, okay. So no making friends with the new people.
Marjorie just looked at her son and blinked for a few seconds. Then Nathan saw her face fall into a disappointed frown and his heart sank. All he wanted to do was to protect her, but he could see the pain he’d just caused her instead. He saw her take a deep breath and look at him seriously. "Nathan honey, you have to stop this. For one thing Vampires aren’t real, no matter how many books you read on the subject. You have to stop trying to get between the rest of the world and me. I know
