Estes Park, Colorado Memories
Welcome to Estes Park, Colorado
Estes Park, Colorado is a premiere tourist destination and gateway city to Rocky Mountain National Park. The valley of Estes Park consists of 32 miles of prime mountain property. It has been inhabited by humans for nearly 10,000 years. Archaeologists believe that nearby Oldman Mountain that is immediately to the west of Estes Park was a Native American vision quest site.
The Ute, Arapaho and Apache Native Americans came to Estes Park during the summer-time to hunt the abundant wildlife in the area. Archaeologists discovered evidence that the Arapaho and Apache Indians fought an intense battle at the Upper Basin Meadows site at Estes Park.
A Kentuckian named Joel Estes and his son, Milton, were the first white men to come to Estes Park.
In mid-October 1859 they camped in the valley during a hunting expedition. Within a few years, Estes Parks became well-known as a sportsman paradise as far away as London. Griff Evans, the Earl of Dunvaren, established a cattle ranch and opened the Estes Park Hotel. Several pioneer families soon arrived. The frontier settlement attracted seasonal tourists worldwide. Estes Park became known as The Crown Jewel of the Rockies.
During the summer of 1903, Freelan O. Stanley arrived at Estes Park to convalesce from tuberculosis. He thrived in the mild climate and reconstructed the North St. Vrain road to Estes Park. This road allowed his Stanley steamers and an auto stage line to be developed bringing in tourists to the valley. In 1907 Stanley began construction of the famous Stanley Hotel. The hotel complex included 105 rooms, a theater and bowling alley. This all-electric hotel opened in June 1909. Tourists loved the grand hotel and flocked to it in droves. Other hotels followed the Stanley, which is still open.
The Estes Park valley has changed greatly since Joel and Mark arrived. The open meadow made way for Lake Estes, a large reservoir of water that enhances the scenic area.
