    Born of an illegitimate relationship, Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus (circa 1469-1536) began a religious career. As a secretary and kin to powerful men, he went on many trips and to many meetings. Through contact with European scholars and printers, he decided to make a living from his writing: he wrote about education and political philosophy, edited and translated ancient and Christian texts, and wrote controversial and religious works. As an author of important letters, he defended classical literature throughout his life, as well as the significance of the message of ancient authors.
