Erika Leonard was born in London in 1963. After working for British television, she rose to fame under the pseudonym E. L. James in 2012 with the Fifty Shades of Grey series, which began as a fanfiction. She lives in a suburb of London with her husband Niall Leonard who is also the screenwriter of the film adaptation of Fifty Shades Darker (coming 2017), and their two children.
Together, the trilogy has sold 125 million copies and has been translated into 52 languages. A film adapted from the first book was released in cinemas in 2015 and was so successful that the production of the two other adaptations is now in progress.
