About this ebook

Unlock the more straightforward side of Eugénie Grandet with this concise and insightful summary and analysis!

This engaging summary presents an analysis of Eugénie Grandet by Honoré de Balzac, a novel about a young woman’s life in the provinces. Eugénie lives as a virtual prisoner in the house of her father, a wealthy man and noted miser, and is thoughtlessly betrayed by her first love Charles before finally finding independence and peace as a widow. The novel offers a detailed exploration of the pettiness and monotony of provincial life, which stands in stark contrast to Eugénie’s beauty, intelligence and generosity of spirit. Eugénie Grandet is one of the Scenes of Provincial Life in Balzac’s The Human Comedy, a vast and hugely ambitious series of around 90 novels and novellas which aimed to depict the entirety of 19th century French society, taking in individuals from all locations, professionals and social classes.
