About this ebook

Cate roams the world a shell of the deity she once was—a dry remark in one hand and a penchant for conflict in the other. Ordered by Hades to stand down or lose her soul forever, Hecate—Goddess of the Crossroads—must bear witness to something sinister brewing in the bowels of the city. Isis is building an army of bloodsuckers and is determined to bring a war to the mortal world.

Having suffered a devastating betrayal by the human Connor, Cate seems content to let it play out until Isis’s new children start leaving a pile of bodies all over the city. There’s also a new powerful player in town who has a grudge against everyone. How long will Cate stand at the crossroads while these powerful beings turn Manhattan into their bloody playground?

    Prologue

Mario Fenty had been having a very bad day. He’d started the morning by spilling coffee on his shirt and had missed his regular 8:00 a.m. subway ride uptown. This had made him late for an early morning presentation he’d had to give to the latest client his advertising company was wooing. As far as his boss was concerned, Mario hadn’t been able to do anything right for the rest of the day.

It was now 11:00 p.m. and all he wanted to do was go home and crawl into bed with his very pregnant wife and forget about this day. Thankfully, he was just one of three people in the last subway car, so he didn’t have to worry about standing on his feet during his ride downtown. He sank into one of the orange seats on the train, put his head back against the window, and tried to relax. He put in his earbuds and turned on a song by Ed Sheeran that always reminded him of his first dance with his wife at their wedding just two years ago.

That was the last normal thought Mario had before the subway cars jerked forward. The grinding of metal on metal caused him to clench his teeth. Mario gripped the seat handle, waiting for the cars to come to a complete stop. The lights flickered and then went out completely. The entire train was cocooned in the tunnel. There was very little light coming through from the next station. Mario took out his earbuds and waited for his eyes to adjust to the darkness.

Suddenly, he heard what sounded like a growl, then something sharp scraped against the windows. Mario felt a cool breeze against his skin that made the hair on his arms stand on end. He stood and groped for the overhead bar that he knew was there even though he couldn’t see.

The other two passengers in the car were screaming and Mario heard a body crash against the wall before him. Mario swallowed loudly around the lump of fear in his throat. His heart beat faster and painfully while his body prepared him to fight or to flee. His preference was to run, but it was dark and the doors were still closed. He planted his feet firmer into the subway floor, assuming a stance to charge whoever had attacked the other passengers.

He had just resigned himself to fight for his life—fight for the life he had built with his wife and for the unborn child he was desperate to meet—when he felt a hand close around his neck and haul him up until his feet were dangling off the ground. The hand squeezed his throat. Mario thought he was going to pass out. The person—or thing—that held him sniffed noisily.

Mario grabbed at the hand around his throat while striking blindly at the face he couldn’t quite make out in the dark. The assailant batted his hands away easily and wrenched his neck to the side. Mario screamed as he felt the sharp teeth tear into his tender flesh. It was a painful bite, but the pain was short-lived.

Mario could hear the creature drinking and before he could imagine the unbelievable explanation for what was going on, the loss of blood finally rendered him unconscious.

    Chapter One (Hecate)

Hecate Cate Theos threw herself bodily across her queen-sized bed, fighting for space against her dog Bussy’s suddenly prodigious ass. At least he wasn’t farting. She knew she had to get out of the bed, but she wasn’t ready to face the world or anyone in it. Especially Ares.

Ares had stuck close to her after their visit to Hades. It had made her feel
