    Context

The Kite Runner is an evocative and touching tale set in Afghanistan and Northern California. It chronicles thirty years of Afghanistan’s changing history and culture—from the Soviet invasion to the Taliban-controlled era in the beginning of the twenty-first century.

The book was released in May 2003, when America was still dealing with the aftermath of 9/11 and the war in Afghanistan. The Kite Runner helped put a human face on an unfamiliar part of the world—one many Americans didn’t know much about. The story went a long way in demystifying Afghanistan and its people, as well as bringing awareness to its rich culture and heritage.

According to an interview with Radio Free Europe, the idea for the novel first came to Khaled Hosseini in 1999 when he was watching a news story about the Taliban setting restrictions on Afghan citizens, including the banning of kite flying. He said, I sat down after that news story and wrote a 25-page short story about two boys in Kabul flying kites, and it became this kind of a much darker, more involved tale than I had anticipated. Two years later, he began to develop the story into a novel.

Kite flying and kite running (chasing down kites whose strings have been cut in the sport of kite fighting) had been popular pastimes in Afghanistan for 100 years, since the game arrived from India. Having taken power after a decade-long conflict with the Soviet Union, the predominantly Pashtun Taliban imposed their conservative version of Islamic law on the people of the region.

    Overview

Amir is haunted by boyhood memories from a winter’s day in 1975. When a dying friend offers him a chance to put to rest his tortured past, he takes it. Nearly twenty-five years after fleeing Afghanistan, Amir returns to his once beautiful, now war-torn homeland. The secrets he uncovers will alter the trajectory of his life in ways he can’t imagine.

As a young boy, Amir was always fighting for his larger-than-life father’s affections. Baba is a rich merchant and well-respected member of the community. In contrast, Amir is sensitive and lacks confidence. Sensing Baba’s disappointment, he wonders if his father will ever fully accept him.
