The bright-eyed girl from Newark, New Jersey would later find her life descending into a dangerous battle with addiction and anxiety. The story of one of the greatest singers of all time is one that is both inspiring and cautionary.
Early Mentorship
Born in Newark, New Jersey in 1963, Whitney Houston had singing in her blood, literally. Houston’s mother, Cissy Houston, was a well-known gospel singer who was part of the Drinkard Quartet, while her father, John, was an entertainment executive. Houston’s cousin was legendary R & B singer Dionne Warwick. Her godmother was gospel singer Darlene Love. Her honorary aunt was even more legendary R & B powerhouse Aretha Franklin. At a young age, Houston was taught vocal technique and the art of performing in front of an audience.
