Deranged - Debbie Lacy
She waited hidden in the dark shadows of the old abandoned mansion deranged, starved, eagerly awaiting something to fulfill her hunger. There was an unusual stillness, a sense of silence that encompassed the area for miles in the Hidden Legends hills of Adams Cove; desolate of any existence when suddenly to her surprise an unexpected wanderer evaded her domain. The little dog was quite frail from lack of food with an injured back leg hobbled in but seemed to sense someone’s presence waiting in the darkness. While anticipating the owner’s deliverance, the small animal limped down the dark hallway towards her as she softly beckoned for him. The scent of death emerged the air as it slowly crept on trampling over bones of the remains that lie scattered when suddenly a loud squeal and a pleading howl echoed amongst the walls passageway as the helpless animal’s brutal attack resulted into a savory feast. Sounds of blood sucking and bone cracking could be heard in the shadowy midst as she voraciously devoured her long awaited meal until depletion; a loud dreadful screech of satisfaction rapidly escaped her lips as she dashed to the comforts of the cellars below. An acquainted place of privacy of which she grew quite accustomed concealed quietly away in the depths of that old mansion.

Tiara and several of her colleagues were on spring vacation visiting and enjoying the festivities and the beautiful sights of Montana. Upon their visit Tiara enticed her friends to join her in canoeing along the bay towards Adams Cove to visit the beautiful mansion she was told by her deceased mother of where her Great, Great Grandparents once dwelled. They packed some of their belongings mainly camping gear, food and supplies; they left their other belongings in the van to where they rented a med-size canoe at the boating docks for several days. While canoeing her friends inquired to hear more about this beautiful place she had heard about but had never seen.
Tiara mentioned that she was the only soul heir to Adam Hofheinz, a millionaire who owned a beautiful vineyard and a winery of over 3000 acres. She went on to mention that she was told that this beautiful mansion overlooked the entire vineyard valley as well as the bay on a cliff they called Hidden Legends. It was said that her Great, Great Grandfather was an admired businessman, quite gregarious and a great philanthropist. People would come from all around to visit as he hosted charitable events and to savor his wonderful wine but it was said that he had a very dark side as some witnessed on several occasions of the insecure malicious outburst towards his estranged wife accusing her of infidelity. There were frequent brutal assaults tormenting her when he became heavily intoxicated. I was told that he would beat her so badly and while torturing her people could hear her screams for miles around from that cliff. There were rumors he would lock her down in the cellars for days, sometimes weeks without food. The people that lived nearby in the valley would complain about the disturbances that echoed from that cliff but when law enforcement arrived to investigate they found a peaceful environment. It was as if nothing happened. My mother told me that the family often wanted her to get away from his abusive tantrums and to come visit with them for a while but she became so apprehensive and terrified of leaving, she would decline because of his horrible intimidation compelling her to stay.
Aw man that’s sick! What a monster! Well what happened then?
Ona, Scott and Andrew inquired.
Well over the years, I was told that they grew apart especially when she became mentally disturbed and he put her away but no one knew where. I was named after her. Yep, my Great, Great Grandmother’s name was Tiara Saoirse (Sar’Shay). Mother said she was a very beautiful woman once until he did all of those awful things to her. She said he broke her jawbone not once but twice as his continued thrashing resulted into scars and bruises that disgraced her. My mother gave me her locket before she died. My Great, Great, Grandmother gave it to my Grandmother who gave it to my mother and now I have it. See, it’s got her picture inside. Wasn’t she beautiful?
She expressed showing it to Ona, Scott and Andrew.
Yea, she was very beautiful!
They agreed. You look a lot like her and just as beautiful too!
Scott flirted as he rowed.
"Aw that’s sweet Scott and thank you!
