    Introduction

Are you suffering from emotional conditions such as anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorders and others? You can get therapy from a professional right away or today you can learn how to help yourself by learning this amazing tool called CBT or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, to help solve your problems, once and for all.

    Decoding Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT is a form of therapy that is designed to help people cope with emotional and behavioral issues by transforming their thinking and actions. The principles employed in CBT tend to be common sense to get healthy responses to emotional problems.

It targets the three components of the therapy.

Cognitive which comprises all mental processes like thoughts, dreams, and imagination; Behavioral which include all your actions and the therapy which is the solution finding aspect.

It is widely used to overcome problems like for anger management, anxiety disorders, addictions, depression and eating disorders just to name a few.

CBT has been gaining popularity-- owing to several studies and ongoing researches that reveal it is more effective in the treatment of these disorders than the use of prescription drugs only.

In the therapy, patients are equipped with information that helps them make the right decisions resulting in positive outcomes.

    CBT Backstory

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a psychotherapy that uses the reframing of negative thoughts approach to cause a change in the behavior. It is based on the principle that problems are brought about by learned unhealthy thoughts and that there are behaviors that can be learned to overcome anxieties. CBT traces its roots from two schools of psychology, Behaviorism and Cognitive Therapy.

Behavioral Therapy: - the behavioral therapy aspect traces its beginnings in the early 1900’s that evolved through the works of several proponents.

    >> Ivan Pavlov (1849-1936) established the Classical Conditioning theory through his experiments involving the study of dogs. The research was originally intended as a study on the dog’s saliva and its relation to digestion. However, he accidentally discovered a form of learning when he noticed that his entrance alone in the room was enough to stimulate salivation on the dogs, even without the presence of food. Further experimentations using sound objects like a bell ringing, revealed that it is possible to cause the dogs to demonstrate unconditioned responses like salivating to the unconditioned stimulus-seeing or smelling food, by using conditioned stimulus-hearing a bell which they have already associated with food.

By taking away the unconditioned stimulus (food) when the conditioned stimulus is presented (bell ring), over time, it reduces the conditioned response (salivation). This is called the Extinction. Spontaneous recovery, on the other hand, resurfaces the conditioned response following a resting period. By using the extinction/recovery cycle repeatedly, it was found in further research that, the conditioned response weakens in intensity each time.

    >> John B. Watson (1878 - 1958) established behaviorism as a psychological field whose famous study called the Little Albert Experiment used the Classical Conditioning theory on a nine-month-old baby, was very much talked about during that time. It involved conditioning the child to develop a fear of rats, when there was previously no fear of it, by associating rats with loud noise

In his book Psychological Care of Infant and Child, he advocated the treatment of children like mini-adults who should not get excessive comfort because they will develop a needy personality when the child grows up.

    >> B.F. Skinner (1904 - 1958) developed the operant conditioning theory and his radical behaviorism philosophy. His Operant Conditioning postulates that the likelihood of behavior (operant) being repeated will depend on how pleasant the consequence was. Respondent behaviors, on the other hand, are automatic behaviors or reflex reactions. Reinforcement are the events that reinforce the behavior which can be positive or negative reinforcement. While punishment is the application of an unpleasant outcome that lessens the likelihood of repeating the same behavior, it can also be a positive punishment, that is giving an unfavorable outcome, or negative punishment, which means removing a favorable outcome.

    >> John Dollard (1900 - 1980) & Neal Miller (1909 - 2002) known for their psychoanalytic learning theory which combines drive, cue, response, and reinforcement. The drive is the discomfort that causes someone to act in response to the cue that was received. What results after the drive is reduced, is called the reinforcement. When the drive is not satisfied, it causes the frustration. A natural reaction to frustration is to try different responses that will satisfy the drive. Conflict arises when the person does two incompatible responses at the same time.

    >> Joseph Wolpe (1915 - 1977) He developed the desensitization technique in treating soldiers of their war neurosis or post-traumatic disorder during World War II, when standard drug therapy proved ineffective. The desensitization technique uses relaxation method to assist patients in unlearning negative behaviors.

During his experiments with cats, he applied the classical conditioning approach where a negative behavior, like fear, was developed when sound was paired with an unpleasant stimulus such as shock, and then gradually unlearned when sound was paired with a positive stimulus like food. In his Reciprocal Inhibition theory of learning, he suggested that when a patient uses the new learned alternative response, over time, the old behavior gradually decreases until it disappears.

    >> Albert Bandura (1925) Bandura’s Social Learning theory, while it still agrees with the same principles from classical and operant conditioning, incorporated the concepts of observational learning and mediation.

Observational Learning - In his Bobo doll experiment, children were studied and revealed that they basically
