I was born in Cambridge, Massachussetts. After living in Columbus, Ohio, for a few years, I moved to Richardson, TX, in 1978, when my father got a job teaching at UT-Dallas. I switched schools a couple times before settling back into the Plano schools and graduated from Plano Senior HS in 1990, Midwestern State (BA in History) in 1995, and UT Dallas (MA) in 2008. I am an aspiring writer, and my interests include movies (especially those from New Zealand), photography, Australian & New Zealand Wildlife, birds, spectator sports (I love baseball and attend Dallas area ball games), and I love to travel. 3 Worlds Journey is my first novel, and I am currently working on more. I love letting my imagination go wild. Most of my stories and characters are based on what I read and what I thought of when I was younger.

3 Mighty Bonds - Matt Kratz
Prologue
It’s so nice to meet you, Jerry!
The pleasure’s all mine!
He was meeting Jerry Rice through the Make A Wish foundation. It was truly an honor.
So how many 49er games have you been to?
None in San Francisco, but I did see you play in Dallas twice. I loved seeing you play.
Well, as long as you enjoyed it.
I did.
The two of them talked for an hour. Volunteers and officials from the foundation were present, as were his parents and other team officials and teammates.
After the session, Rice finally got up and left. He left the wish kid
an autographed ball and jersey, along with game tickets and a promise that he would give the family a trip to San Francisco for a 49ers game and a tour of the team’s facilities.
The kid would hold onto the memory and cherish it forever.
Chapter I
Thanks for helping out, Hank!
Hank Wade was helping out as a volunteer for the Make A Wish Foundation. He had been attending a party for the foundation and the wish kids.
It was my pleasure,
he said.
Are you sure you can’t stay longer?
I’d love to, but I have a doctor’s appointment in a little bit. I need to get to that. I love attending these, though. I’ll stay longer at next month’s party.
I understand. See you next month!
Hank waved goodbye, jumped in his car, and drove off. Make A Wish had held a special place in his heart ever since it enabled him to meet Jerry Rice when he was recovering from abdominal cancer when he was a kid. Now that he was an adult, he decided to pay them back by getting involved with them as a volunteer-he had enjoyed the online training session. He had heard that country singer Kevin Sharp had done the same thing. He had helped grant three wishes so far and enjoyed the monthly parties.
He worked as a marketing director for a local public relations firm in the Dallas area. He had to attend semi-regular doctor appointments-just in case the cancer might still be in his system.
He finally arrived at UT-Southwestern. They had a good medical facility and a top-notch oncology department. He actually had two appointments-one with his usual doctor and one with an oncology screener.
He met with the screener first. She told him that they had given the results to his regular doctor and to go see him.
As he waited in the waiting room, a line from an old Statler Brothers song came to mind:
When the waiting room is empty, and the doc says ‘come right in,’…I’ll be coming home to you.
He knew that would, well, almost never happen.
After a while of waiting behind a few people, the doctor finally called for him.
Dr. White!
Hank said. So glad to see you!
Me too,
Dr. White said. How have you been?
Ok,
Hank replied.
First off, I have some rather bad news,
Dr. White said.
Uh-oh, Hank thought. Never a good sign when the doctor opens your appointment with that.
Ok, let’s get it out of the way,
Hank said as he fidgeted his fingers.
It looks like the cancer has returned,
the doctor said. Not just in your abdomen, but it is starting to spread to your liver as well.
Is there any good news to this?
Hank asked.
Yes, we caught it in time before it reached your pancreas,
Dr. White said with a smile. Because of that, it isn’t 100% terminal. The sooner we start treatment the better.
I’m game,
Hank said.
Lucky for both you and us,
the doctor said. My advice is to ho to oncology and schedule something ASAP. Maybe even today.
Will do.
The two men shook hands. Hank went the oncology department and scheduled a treatment schedule and regimen. He then called his workplace and requested an extensive medical leave off, which was granted, pending doctor’s contact.
Hank then hopped in his car and headed home.
Chapter II
Hank started chewing on his carrots. He needed to eat better with the bad diagnosis.
At least there was hope. But what if they were wrong? That was also a possibility.
He sat down on his sofa and closed his eyes for a moment. He thought he felt himself drift off for a moment.
What would you most like to have done?
A person was asking him. He sort of recognized the other person.
You mean, like my bucket list?
Hank said.
Yeah,
the other person said. Now that you’ve been so severely diagnosed, and if you could be certain that those things could come true, what would you ask for?
Boy, that’s a tough one,
Hank said. Give me a moment on that one.
Take your time.
Hank thought about for a minute. He finally spoke, and watched as the person jotted down stuff as he said what he wanted.
Well, I’d make sure my friends and family members were well off,
he said. I’d see some of my all-time favorite music artists like Willie Nelson, Sawyer Brown, Clint Black, and others in concert. I’d make sure I met some of my favorite celebrities like Carrie Underwood, Tom Hanks, Stephen King, and Jimmy Carter. I’d travel to places like San Diego, New Zealand, the International Peace Garden, and other places I’ve always wanted to go to. I’d track down old friends from high school and other places I’ve lost track of. I’d learn how to play musical instruments like the soprano sax and guitar. Since I’m a writer on the side, I’d get noticed as a writer. And I’d find other volunteer opportunities.
Fascinating list!
The man exclaimed. I’m sure this can be accommodated!
Excuse me?
Hank asked. Just who are you?
Someone from the Adult Make A Wish Program,
the man replied as he placed the list down on the table, got up, and walked away.
Hank slowly opened his eyes. That had to be a dream, he thought.
That was a dream, wasn’t it? It had to be.
He got up and started to walk around the room. All that time with Make A Wish was giving him a very active imagination. That was it.
