The Jingle Bell Java Cozy Mystery - Sasha Mckenzie
Some deep dark secrets get to the bottom of the truth. You can’t keep the truth hidden forever.
This Christmas I’ll never forget. It was memorable but very sad. My name is Shana Melissa McCormick. I’m 30 years old and work as a clerical aide at a large law firm in The Big Apple. I’m home on Christmas vacation spending time with my wonderful, but not so perfect, family for the Holidays. I’d like to let you in on a little secret, though. Have you ever heard the phrase, When pigs fly? It’s an adynaton. A way of saying something that will never happen. Well, let me tell you, I did see a pig fly! It flew inches away from the top of my scalp causing my auburn, shoulder-length bob to swish back and forth. And, to top it all off, it even ambushed me. Right smack dab on my glasses. Gooey, brown fluids, juices from it, were dripping off my glasses down my face (I’m sure causing my mascara to streak) and then dripped onto my new, white silk blouse. It was awful! As I found out, there’s a first time for everything! This is how the story goes.

The antique dining table, dating back to the early 1940’s, was covered with my mother’s beautiful lacy, dark-blue tablecloth. On the oblong table, sat my mother’s thirty-year old, gorgeous, red paisley pattern dinnerware set made from fine bone china. The scalloped edges of the plates and saucers were embellished with gold gilt giving the china dinnerware an extra elegant appearance. My mother’s favorite vanilla candles glowed magically as the candles stood tall and proud like toy soldiers on the table from their gold gilt pedestals. The candles illuminated the Christmas spiral ham and fixings we were about to partake. And the incandescent candles also provided a nice pleasant aroma that my olfactory system sensed right away as I stepped into the dining room.
Dinner girls. Wake up your father, Shana,
My mother, Sasha Melanie McCormick, called cheerfully as she poked her head around the corner with a warm smile on her face.
My mother was approaching fifty but didn’t look a day over thirty. Wrinkles on my mother’s face were non-existent. Her skin was as smooth as a baby’s bottom. My mother hardly wore makeup except for special occasions that consisted of a light beige, dusting of powder on her nose and cheek, a swipe across her lips of cherry flavored lip shine, and a hint of green, sparkly eye shadow that made her hazel eyes come alive. My mother wore a frosted bob that framed her delicate and pretty face. Her beauty could be described as au naturel. Even her figure was perfect and the envy of most of the ladies of town. My mother looked like she belonged on any one of the various covers of New York glamour and fashion magazines. She was 5 foot 9 inches and thin with a perfect hourglass shape, measurements of 36 26 36. She could even make a cooking apron look stylish and sexy. My mother stood in the doorway wearing her sultry lacy apron, black bodice with red straps that fastened behind her neck, and a red silk sashay wrapped around her waist, tied on her side in the shape of a bow, accentuating her tiny waist. Even though it was an apron covering her Christmas outfit, a red cashmere sweater and black silk skirt, she looked like she was getting ready to go out dancing at a nightclub, not that she had just slaved over a hot stove for the past eight hours.
My father, on the other hand, was quite a
