About this ebook

In 1963, Professor Leonard Harris was on a field expedition to El Oriente and accidentally walked into the middle of a four hundred-year-old religious war between two prominent tribes in the area. The Huaorani (the forest dwellers) who worshiped the magnificent Jaguar as their most powerful deity, and the Quatuani (the river people) who worshiped the deadly piranha.

One of those tribes believes that the white man just might be the next reincarnation of their most sacred god. The other tribe believes it too and will stop at nothing to murder the Professor before he can fulfill his dark destiny.

The question is...what does Leonard Harris believe?

And is he really willing to die just to find out?

The Face of an Unlikely God is a 10K word novelette that can also be found in the collection Gods & Monsters Vol. 1 by the same author.

    THE FACE OF AN UNLIKELY GOD

    You’ll never find yourself until you’re willing to face the truth;

    no matter how painful the truth may be.

    El Oriente, Ecuador – Present Day

    The scars are what the boy notices first. Thick, red welts running in parallel lines down both of the old man’s cheeks. The boy is thirteen years old, and his only concern here at the airport is trying to peddle a dollar or two from another silly tourist, but the scars stop him dead in his tracks, his practiced list of indispensable services left unsaid, forgotten as he stares in wide-eyed wonder.

    The old man is used to it by now.

    Come here, boy, he whispers, barely moving his lips. His aged voice is scratchy, bass deep — almost as unnerving to listen to as his disfigured visage is to gaze upon.

    The boy is unsure of himself, reluctant to approach, but the old man is wise and knows the lad’s weak spot.

    I have money.

    They huddle together talking quietly for a moment, and then the tension visibly leaves the boy’s shoulders. He smiles, nods his head in agreement and heads for the exit. The old man slowly follows.

    Across the vast tract of rolling land where the Amazon meets the Ecuadorian Andes, is a place known as El Oriente. A strange, mystical place, forgotten by time and man alike. It’s here that over half of the rivers that form the mighty Amazon begin to flow. Almost inaccessible because of the mountains, El Oriente was the very last place on the Amazon to be discovered by Western civilization as the early explorers pushed upriver from the Atlantic coast. To this day, much of the land is still undisturbed by modern society.

    Not all of it, unfortunately.

    It wasn’t the river that lured the Western world — it was the oil. After World War II, the search for deposits in El Oriente began to steadily build. Today, the oil market has created a frenzy of development that is rapidly spreading across the region, threatening to destroy this wondrously exotic land forever.

    The dirty little town of Coca is a perfect example of man’s ravenous greed — a forest boomtown, where the roads are literally paved with crude
