Sunday
Yeah, Mom,
I scrubbed one hand through my hair as I stared out the window of my penthouse office suite, unconsciously squeezing the cell phone that I held in my other hand. "I know you already made all the plans assuming I had a plus one, but if Tiffany doesn't want to come, what am I supposed to do? Hogtie her and throw her into the plane's cargo hold?"
The barrage of words that followed did little to clear up the situation. It boiled down to one thing: I was expected to find a way to make it happen. I sighed.
Yeah, okay, Mom,
I broke in when she stopped to breathe and rolled my eyes, knowing I was wasting my breath. I'll try talking to her again. Uh-huh. Yeah. I can't wait to see you either. Give Dad my love.
I pressed the end button on the phone and barely stopped myself from slamming it down on the counter.
My fiancée just had to pick the week of my sister's destination wedding in Jamaica to decide that she needed space.
I snorted as I replayed that conversation in my head. Given that she'd had to pull her tongue out of some random 'roid jockey's mouth to say it when I ran into her outside the gym, I was pretty sure I hadn't been crowding her. Groaning, I shoved my cell phone into my hip pocket and headed out to the bar where my friends would be waiting. I'd always heard that alcohol wasn't a solution, but I was willing to give it a try.
Tuesday
When my plane touched down at Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay three days later, I still had no idea exactly how I was going to explain my absent fiancé. My family was scattered throughout North America, and while I traveled extensively as part of my job and saw them often, Cici's wedding was the first opportunity any of them would have had to meet Tiffany. With my parents nagging the hell out of me to settle down before I hit forty, I was not looking forward to telling them I'd been dumped. Sucking it up, I grabbed my carry-on and headed for the shuttle that would take me to the resort. I knew my parents and Cici had arrived the day before, so I had about another twenty minutes to figure out what I was going to tell them about the status of my love life.
As expected, they were waiting for me - anxiously, if the way Cici was bouncing on the balls of her feet was any indication. I exited the shuttle and was immediately swept into a flurry of hugs and greetings. My pleasure at seeing my family froze into a ball of dread when I heard the next words out of my mom's mouth.
And you must be Tiffany! It’s so good to finally meet you!
I spun around to see my mother grabbing a total stranger in a huge bear hug before passing the startled woman around for my Dad to maul before he passed her to my sister.
I groaned inwardly as the willowy brunette allowed herself to be groped and greeted with a strained smile on her face but thankfully without screaming for help. Or macing my parents. Oh, hell.
"Hi. What a lovely welcome. It's nice
