Myra the cat was batting at the shiny tinsel hanging from the inside-tree when Joe and her mistress walked past. Her mistress opened the front door. Myra scampered towards the door. If that dog’s out there again, I’ll scratch his nose off!
No,
said her mistress, shutting the door in Myra’s face. The widow stooped down and caught the cat. Myra was lifted off the floor. She allowed it. The yellow dog would be easier to spot from up here.
I’m sorry I can’t stay for Christmas, Grandma,
said Joe. He gave Myra a slow ear rub with one hand. He’d arrived a couple days ago, ruining their routine. But he smelled a little bit like Clarence, Myra’s favorite human, so she supposed she could forgive him.
Wish I didn’t have to fly back for finals,
said Joe.
The widow smiled. Oh, that’s fine, honey, school’s important, you know! Grandma’s glad you came down to visit and put her decorations up. You’re a good boy.
He leaned down to hug her, tears in his eyes. His broad arms swallowed up the old woman and cat both.
