About this ebook

Life is finally settling down for private investigator Nicki Valentine, her kids, and her boyfriend Dean. But when a jailed mom seeks help for her endangered biological daughter, who just "aged out" of foster care, Nicki can't say no.

With Dean by her side and her free-wheeling BFF eager to investigate too, Nicki braves back alleys, drug dens, and the strip-club scene, all while wondering if any risk is too great when it comes to finding a teen in trouble.

As if navigating the mean streets of King County, Virginia, isn't enough, Nicki also faces the realities of dating as a single mom, including "sleepover" requests she never anticipated. Ultimately—in both relationships and work—Nicki must decide, “How much am I willing to risk for love?”

Even though this is only the third book in the series it feels like we've come a long way from the first book that I had loved so much. This installment just fell flat for me. Maybe that is because I was so frustrated with Nicki and how she insisted on putting herself and her best friend Kenna in danger (Kenna was a willing participant in the investigation). Towards the end of the book Nicki and Kenna were in way over their heads and instead of letting someone more experienced or able to help take care of things Nicki insisted on putting herself in danger. Nicki just irked me throughout the book. I am happy at what happened between her and Dean at the end but cannot honestly see myself continuing on with this series. Thanks to Netgalley and Henery Press for the galley.

This review is based on an eARC I received from NetGalley. It is an honest and voluntary review and the advanced receipt of it in no way affected my review or rating.Entertaining, witty and an easy read! This is the third book in the Nicki Valentine Mystery series and I had no issues picking up the history of the series. It could be read as a stand-alone but where would the fun be in that? Nicki is a fabulous character and I love that although she is a confident woman she is not written as perfection. Life as a private investigator is not always simple and she struggles with the impact that her career choice has and could have on her role as a mother. I really appreciated that this dilemma was a part of the story but not an aspect that the main character lamented on throughout.I loved the character of Kenna, Nicki’s best friend and neighbor! Nicki and Kenna together just crack me up! They get themselves into some crazy and dangerous situations. There are also no lengths to which Kenna will not go to in order to save her friend. I adore stories that has a true friendship element and this story fits the bill to perfection.I thought that the author took difficult social issues (aging out of foster care, human trafficking, prostitution) and was able to weave them into a light and easy read without making light of the issues. A really nice way to bring awareness to the subjects.I enjoyed that the mom aspect was truly a part of the plot. Nicki had to think about situations like being home for the bus, arranging childcare, talking to the kids after Nicki’s love interest, Dean, had watched them for a long period of time just to make sure that he was on the up and up and didn’t try any funny business. Those are very realistic scenarios and I am glad that they were not glossed over. I mean the main character was supposed to be a single mother so she would have her kid’s welfare come before her PI business. Was there anything that disappointed me? There was really no mystery. Basically it was a story about finding a missing person and the storyline was more or less outlined in the beginning and the rest was picking up the explanatory pieces to bring it all together. There were a few blushes of suspense but no red herrings, no moments where it looked like they ran out of possibilities. Everything just fell into place. Do not get me wrong it was engaging but I like a mystery to have an actual mystery. This is an amusing story that has well developed characters, it is insightful, has great pacing and a very satisfying ending. There is action, danger, love and friendship woven throughout this entire book and it is lively from start to finish. I would highly recommend this book to fans of cozy mysteries aka “cozies” or anyone looking for an entertaining read.*Thank you to NetGalley & Henery Press for this eARC of Skydive*
