About this ebook
Caleb wasn’t coming out, per se. That would imply that he had previously been closeted. In reality, it had just never occurred to him that he might be attracted to men. Until that is, a pair of emerald eyes and a chiseled jawline at the gym caught his attention.
After the man that he had thought he would spend the rest of his life with had suddenly walked out on him with no explanation, Kane had all but given up on love and immersed himself in his work. Not everyone gets a happily ever after.
Then came the day when Caleb was caught staring, and their worlds shifted. Could Caleb really be his one and only?

Prologue
Kane leaned against the ancient bar, the rough wood biting into the small of his back as he cast a bored glance over the crowd. The scent of stale bodies and staler booze assaulted his nostrils as people shoved their way past. Kane huffed out a breath before raising the longneck bottle to his mouth for a long drag. Slightly bitter and ice-cold, the beer cleared his senses as it ran slowly down his throat. Closing his eyes, Kane focused on the deep bass of the music.
His eyes shot back open as an unexpected touch slid along his forearm. Evening.
His low voice was cordial as he met a pair of deep brown eyes.
Sorry to disturb you,
the stranger responded in a velvet-smooth voice, removing his hand with a slow, stroking movement, but you looked lonely.
Kane shrugged and raised the bottle back to his mouth, this time running his tongue teasingly around the rim. Not especially.
Too bad.
The other man scanned Kane’s body, blatantly appreciative. I was hoping to keep you company.
Kane returned the assessing glance. The man standing opposite him was Hispanic, a hair under six foot, and well built - in other words, gorgeous and with an accent that would make a grocery list sound erotic. Kane took another draw from his beer before setting the bottle on the bar. Wanna get out of here?
Kenny? You here?
Kane called as he stumbled into the cramped office space he shared with his cousin. It was unusual for the door to be unlocked when she was there alone.
Coffee’s ready.
Kendall's familiar voice floated down the hall.
Kane detoured through the small kitchenette to fill his mug with hot caffeinated bliss before continuing to his desk. Good morning,
he said, smiling at the redhead already reclining in the chair opposite his desk.
Is it?
Well, Mondays blow, but overall, it’s acceptable.
He took a deep drink from his mug. Good weekend?
The redhead shrugged. I’d rather talk about yours.
Mine?
He downed half the mug this time. Why?
Anything you want to tell me?
Green eyes almost identical to his were narrowed in his direction.
Um, no?
Kane thought back to his weekend. Ken-doll, you’re gonna have to throw me a bone. What’s wrong? Did I forget to do something?
She sighed heavily. You really don’t know, do you?
Sorry, doll.
He shook his head slowly. I don’t.
Kendall O’Neill, his partner in crime since he was a kid, rose and began to pace. Her high-heeled leather boots landed silently on the cheap carpeting.
Made a break in the Nunez case Friday night,
she said.
Kane paused at the sudden change of topic. Good. That’s the wife who thinks her husband is cheating, right?
Right.
That was fast.
They had only been hired to investigate the case Thursday night. How’d you crack it?
It was Stevie.
A friend of a friend had begged them to hire the twenty-two-year-old who fancied himself the next Sherlock Holmes. His parents were hoping that experiencing the real life of an investigator would bore him into returning to college. I had him tail the husband. Kid followed him to a bar. Watched him hook up with a someone.
She paused. Got perfect pics of the license plate on the car they left in.
Kane nodded approvingly. Did you send the plate over to the precinct?
Kendall reached into a folder that Kane hadn’t noticed on the desk and pulled out an enlarged print. No.
She slid the picture over to him and folded her arms across her chest.
Oh, hell.
Kane stared down at the picture, which clearly showed his license plate. Fuck my life.
Kendall considerately waited for Kane to refill his coffee before the bitching started. What. The. Serious. Fuck?
She glared at him. You went home with the client’s husband? The one we’re supposed to catch cheating?
Um...
"Um my ass, she shot back.
Explain!"
Kane sighed. Ken-doll,
her glare strengthened at the nickname, "I swear I didn’t know who he was! Draining his coffee, he set the cup down, and, grabbing her hand in his, pulled her into his lap, wrapping his arms around her.
I’m sorry."
Kane.
Yeah?
If anyone see this, they are going to think there is something very wrong going on here.
Kane laughed and let her up. I know, I know. We’re not that kind of family.
As children, they had been raised together by their grandmother and were closer than most siblings. He leaned back in his chair as Kendall reclaimed her seat.
Tell me what happened,
she demanded
With a sigh, Kane ran through the events at the bar, culminating in a tryst at the hotel room his partner had already procured.
You didn’t even get his name?
His cousin’s voice was concerned but not condemning.
No, Ken.
Kane pinched the bridge of his nose. I didn’t.
Kendall hummed thoughtfully. That isn’t like you.
I know.
He shrugged, unable to meet her eyes. I was lonely.
Rising, Kendall bent down to hug him fiercely. She had become increasingly worried about him after Brian, his only real boyfriend, had walked out on him with no reason given the year before. It’ll be okay.
Kane shook his head. I fucked up your case.
You didn’t. Not really.
Kendall smiled at him fondly. Technically, all you did was confirm that Nunez is willing to cheat.
She winked. Now, we send a decoy to the bar to try and pick him up.
She ruffled his hair. No one else will ever know.
Kane blew her a kiss and leaned back in his chair. Mondays suck.
Chapter 1
Kane?
Kendall’s voice cut through Kane’s focus as he reviewed the series of crime scene photos laid out in front of him.
What?
he asked.
Client’s here.
Neatly stacking the photos, he slid them back into the
