An American Rebel in the American Autonomous Region of China
He stood on something, and heard a yell behind him. The Chinese woman screamed, and stepped back. Will Black turned round and was about to apologize, but then he heard the words coming out of the Chinese woman’s mouth. Will was only ten years old, but he was fluent in Mandarin Chinese – that was mandatory for all American children. However, this woman was speaking in Cantonese. Will knew very little Cantonese, but he did know the Cantonese word for Western dog
, and he knew it was being used about him. More to the point the woman in front of him had also referred to his father as a Western dog.
Will shut his mouth and stared at the Chinese woman. His father looked down at him waiting for Will to apologize. Will watched his father’s concern turn to fear. Will apologize now,
his father said.
In front of him the Chinese woman was still spewing forth a stream of Cantonese. Her husband was looking around now, a puzzled look on his face. Between the Chinese couple, their son who was the same age as Will was expressing concern, and also indignation. Things went bad suddenly and they went bad fast.
You will apologize to my wife for stepping on her foot,
the Chinese official said.
Around them the noise of the fair suddenly went quiet. Will could see two Chinese guards approaching out of the corner of his eye. His father nudged him. The Chinese woman was still yelling in Cantonese. He couldn’t understand a word she was saying except Western dogs
. He was angry now. He kept his mouth shut, and assumed the expressionless gaze so prized by his Chinese teacher.
The Chinese Administrator looked at his father, and then addressed him. It appears that you are unable to control your son. Please set your pain belt to level three.
His father looked anxious. Please Sir,
he said. The boy’s mother died last week. He is still in mourning.
The Chinese man understood, and was prepared to back off, but his wife was furious. She opened her handbag, and pulled out a small controller. She pointed at his father, and pressed a button. Synching to pain belt. Ident: Philip Black A-452693715.
His father looked at the Chinese woman. Please not in front of the boy,
he said.
The Chinese woman didn’t answer. She pressed two buttons on the little controller. Synching complete, pain belt set at level five,
the little controller said.
The Chinese woman pressed another button, and then his father was on the floor screaming. On their twelfth birthday all Americans were fitted with a pain belt. It consisted of seven small implants around the waist, and a larger implant around the wrist. It was always required by the Chinese that an American set the pain level himself as another means of control. The Chinese woman pointed the controller at Will, but Will was only ten years old, and too young to be fitted with a pain belt. That was about to change.
Unable to synch,
the controller said.
The Chinese man was looking at his wife. It was plain that he thought she had gone too far but appearance had to be preserved. He looked at Will and his face was stern. Apologize at once boy,
he said in Mandarin Chinese.
Will looked down at his father screaming on the floor. He had never seen him like that. And then the words came. I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry,
he screamed. Please make it stop.
He had screamed the words in English. The Chinese woman looked at him. You will talk in Mandarin,
she said.
Will repeated the words, this time in Mandarin. The woman looked at him. Your diction is not good, please repeat the words properly,
she said.
Will knew his diction was good. This woman was screwing with him. Her husband put his hand on her arm and she looked at him. The Chinese woman looked at Will’s father writhing on the ground and then she turned to him. He repeated the words again enunciating them clearly. The Chinese woman looked down at his father and then spoke two words in Cantonese. Will recognized the phrase Western dog
and then she pressed a button on the controller.
Pain level reset to neutral,
the machine said.
Will knelt down next to his father. His father was gasping and sucking air into his lungs but at least he had stopped screaming. He looked up at Will and there was shame in his eyes.
Get to your feet,
the Chinese woman said.
Will helped his father struggle to his feet. His father bowed to the Chinese woman and it was obvious the bow was painful for him. He had evidently pulled a muscle while on the ground. Will looked at the Chinese woman. His eyes were down in a gesture of respect but he couldn’t help notice that her son had a big self-satisfied smile on his face.
I apologize for my son,
Philip Black said.
Your apology is accepted,
the Chinese man said. It was plain that he thought his wife had gone too far.
This time his wife put her hand on his arm. Your son is impudent,
she said. I am going to give you two more minutes at level two. You will stand to attention while that happens.
Yes Ma’am,
Philip Black said. He stood straight, and the Chinese woman reset the controller.
Will Black turned and watched his father stand to attention, and then he heard his father’s labored breathing as the pain belt kicked on. Between the two adults the Chinese boy had a big smirk on his face. Suddenly Will could stand it no more. He
