About this ebook

Keep Him Happy. It’s a simple request. But we all know how difficult men could be – or people in general. And we join Lamar as he begins to learn just that. His young heart has always been set on the country where he visits his grandmother every summer with his cousins. But as different men begin to enter his life – some of their charming and foolish ways tug at and harden his heart. Lamar’s journey over these three summers is an erotic one you would expect from Tyson Anthony. Whether it’s coming out, a feisty grandmother, family drama, annoying cousins, thug love, or race-baiting campaigns, Lamar’s tale is also a familiar one even you have possibly lived. Through out it all though, Lamar searches for the one guy who can simply Keep Him Happy.

    I – Summer Eighteen

Lamar had taken this ride eighteen times in his life. Beginning when he was only one, Lamar would spend the summer at his grandmother’s house in the country - Rowling, South Carolina to be exact. He took this ride with his mother and father for the first few years. And around the age of twelve, following their separation, he only would take this ride with his mother.

Lamar wasn’t the only one taking this ride, but so were his cousins who were all traveling in from different parts of the country. No matter how many times he did spent summers in Rowling, Lamar always had that same rumble of excitement inside. He could imagine hugging his grandmother, dapping his cousins, and the summer adventures they would have to come. Lamar’s mother Diana turned into the parking lot of her mother’s home.

Diana sighed as she lounged back in the driver’s seat, We here.

Lamar looked to his mother as she scratched at her head of curly, dark, hair, You coming in?

Boy you know I’m not speaking to my momma right now, Diana said as she rolled her eyes.

That’s so petty, mom. You feuding with an eighty-year-old woman.

It’s her fault I had to sell the house, Diana said, She got money and don’t help me one bit.

Lamar hated this. He hated having to pick sides between his two favorite women, Mom, come in.

If you don’t get out of this car you’ll be riding back with me, Diana snapped.

Lamar snatched his backpack out of the backseat and got out of the car. His mom pulled out of the dirt parking lot without waving goodbye to him. He knew his mother was mad at him for being here. Lamar knew she felt as if he was siding with his grandmother. But it was nothing like that. He was here to see his cousins, to continue the family tradition, to spend time with the woman he rarely got to see. And he wasn’t going to let some pointless feud ruin that for him.

Lamar turned his attention away from the family drama and towards his grandmother’s house. She had owned the home since the seventies, one of the first black home owner in the small town. The yellow home had three bedrooms, a two car garage, and there was an old red barn that she mostly stored old furniture in out back. The barn had been built by his grandfather – the man dead and gone due to a poisoned drink he sipped at his favorite bar one night. Lamar started towards the home and knocked on the door.

His grandmother Mo, who kept her grey hair in a bun, answered the door wearing a pink sundress and white flip-flops, You the last one here.

Mo, Lamar exclaimed as he hugged the woman.

Boy stop squeezing before you snap my back, Mo said as she softly laughed, I’m old now.

You said we all young till we dead, Lamar said as he let her loose.

That was before old age smacked me in the head, Mo said, Come on in and see your cousins.

Lamar made his way into the home. He got chills throughout his body as he sat his backpack down in the living room. Lamar loved everything about her home, it all felt so classic. She had a white couch with printed yellow flowers, a box TV, a bowl full of hard candy on the coffee table, and she still had an AC in her living room window. The kitchen was just as classic as the rest of the home. Not much had changed about the home over the summers.

Mo pinched Lamar on the arm, Put the bag in the boys’ room, don’t leave it on my floor.

Lamar laughed as he rubbed at his arm, Damn Mo, that hurt.

Damn? Oh, you think you can cuss now cause you grown?

Lamar formed a smug grin as he rubbed at the patch of hair on his chin, You see this hair on my face.

Barely, Mo said as she playfully rolled her eyes, Take that bag in the room.

Lamar picked up his bag and started toward the back of the home. The rules were the same every summer, the girls stayed in one room, the guys in the other. And the youngest cousin usually preferred to stay in Mo’s room, glued to the woman.

Lamar stopped by the girls’ room first to find his cousins Shay, Angie, and Paris hanging out and on their phones. They were all born a year after each, Shay fifteen, Angie sixteen, and Paris seventeen. Shay and Angie were Lamar’s uncle kids, and Paris was the daughter of his aunt.

Damn, all y’all got ugly, Lamar teased.

They all started trash talking him and throwing clothes at him. Lamar stood in the doorway catching and throwing their clothes back at them as he laughed. So many memories were already coming back to him about the times he had spent playing with them.

He called them ugly but they all had grown to become beautiful young women. Angie and Shay were clones of their mother: dark-skinned, dreaded hair, strong facial features. And Paris was a bit on the heavier side even though her mom was a gym nut.

Paris stopped throwing things at Lamar, I thought you were my favorite cousin?

I guess so, Lamar said, How you doin?

Fat, Paris said as she pouted.

You’re not fat, girl, Lamar said.

I know I am, Paris said, And I know Mo’s cooking only gonna make me fatter.

I feel the same way, Shay said as she started to fold her clothes.

Angie rushed up to Lamar with her phone, Can I put you on my snap right quick?

    Lamar laughed, Why?

Because my friends don’t believe that I got a cousin who look like Jaden Smith? Angie said as she aimed her phone camera at Lamar.

I don’t look like that gay nigga, Lamar said as he pushed her phone out of his face.

Angie played with Lamar’s nappy fro, Yes you do, now stop playing and pose.

Lamar made a silly face and Angie snapped the photo anyway, Ugh, you had to do the ugliest pose.

Lamar laughed, I’ll see y’all later.

Lamar left the girls’ room and continued down the hall. He passed Mo’s room to find his youngest cousin Pete sitting in the center of their grandmother’s bed coloring. Pete was Paris’s little brother and already taking after his mother. He played almost every sport but at the end of the day was just a lil kid who barely spoke unless it was to Mo. Lamar waved at Pete and he was ignored. He simply laughed it off and continued to the boys’ room.

Lamar arrived to the boys’ room, Niggas, He exclaimed.

Lamar’s cousins DeAndre and Kareem rushed up to him and started to dap him. DeAndre was the same age as Lamar and was Shay and Angie’s big brother. DeAndre was tall, lanky, dark-skin, and had a mouthful of braces. And then there was Kareem, always the trouble maker. He was the oldest out of the entire set of cousins, nineteen. Kareem was the son of Lamar’s uncle who had been in jail forever.

Kareem’s mother also didn’t speak to Mo because of money drama but still allowed him to come every summer. She mainly sent him though to keep him off the streets during the summer. But that didn’t stop Kareem from slowly morphing from the wimpy cousin into this tattooed clad thug whose fashion sense basically mimicked whatever the chart topping rappers wore.

DeAndre nudged Lamar’s head, Please tell me you got some pussy.

Mind your business, Lamar said, I guess since you brought it up you got some?

DeAndre’ face lit up, I got a steady girlfriend nigga. Finally!

I saw her on Facebook, Lamar said.

DeAndre started to dance around, Pussy all the time any time.

Kareem rolled his eyes, Y’all niggas late, I’ve been fucking bitches since middle school.

DeAndre shoved Kareem, Because your momma let your ass run wild.

I got my shit together though, Kareem said, More money than both of you.

Cause we don’t sell weed, DeAndre said, But imma be enlisting soon. Your lil weed man checks won’t be able to touch that military money. The first thing imma buy is a Mustang and then imma get my girl a ring, and then my first apartment. My life is set in stone. All you got in your future is an orange jumpsuit.

I hope some terrorists kidnap your ass, Kareem taunted.

Y’all two always fighting, Lamar said with a soft laugh, I missed this shit.

Kareem looked to Lamar, What you doing after this summer? College?

Lamar shrugged, I might get a job. Help my mom out.

She still broke? Kareem asked, It’s crazy your pops won’t help her.

He doesn’t have too, Lamar said, They ain’t together no more and I’m grown.

DeAndre nodded, I guess that’s true. Mo ain’t help either.

Mo ain’t no bank, Kareem said, She got her own bills.

Lamar nodded in agreement, How can we get that but not our moms?

Because women like drama, DeAndre and Kareem said in unison.

They both burst out laughing and dapped each other. Out of the bedroom bathroom walked a shirtless guy who had a defined physique. He wore nothing but a pair of black basketball shorts and kept licking his lips as he dug around in a duffle bag. The guy took out a brush and started to brush his buzzcut hair.

Lamar motioned at him, Is this our long lost cousin?

Kareem laughed, Nah, this my nigga Joquese.

    Joq, He corrected, Just Joq.

Kareem looked to Joq as he thumbed at Lamar, Aye, this my other cousin, Lamar.

Joq walked over to Lamar and dapped him. Lamar had to pull himself together. He was so used to looking at guys like Joq on Tumblr. The type of guys who had the perfect face, perfect body, and a swagger about them that left one speechless. Joq had all of that going on which was even making the act of dapping him difficult. Lamar wasn’t felling chatty at all anymore, but instead a sudden shyness.

Joq looked Lamar in the eyes and smirked, You good?

Yeah, Lamar softly said, Why are you here?

Lamar didn’t mean to ask that question out loud.

Joq laughed, Oh, so I’m not invited? Am I intruding? Damn, my bad.

Kareem thumbed at Joq, Mo met Joq when she was up in Illinois visiting her friend in the hospital. We rode her around the entire time she was in the city. She kept up with him after she left and invited him to come this summer. You know how she think all our friends family. I think she just got a crush on this nigga.

Joq smirked as he nodded, Yup, I came to fuck y’all granny this summer.

Nobody cracked a smile at his words, only Joq himself.

DeAndre twisted his nose at Joq, And on that note, imma walk away.

Kareem shoved Joq, Nigga, don’t come up here being nasty.

Joq kept laughing. Lamar couldn’t stop looking at Joq, he looked even better when he smiled. Lamar was glad Joq was here, he was amazing to look at. But at the same time he was bothered by his presence. This was a family thing. And Lamar’s family knew the same version of him he presented every summer. None of them had yet to meet the side of him that he hid – the gay black boy. The gay black boy who couldn’t stop staring at Joq.

Lamar put his backpack on one of the three beds in the room, How long y’all been friends?

Kareem relaxed in his own bed, I met this nigga in high school.

Your cousin was my plug, Joq said, Still is even though his product cheap.

Mo stepped into the bedroom, You all situated?

Yes ma’am, Joq answered for them, You have a lovely house too.

Kareem laughed, Stop kissing ass, nigga.

Mo looked to Kareem, Don’t make me toss my slipper at you, boy.

Kareem laughed, If I come back with any bruises my momma gonna press charges.

I believe that, Mo said, Too many women in this family money hungry. They ain’t having none of mine. But anyways, DeAndre and Kareem I need you two to come move some stuff to the barn for me. I have a pull out couch in there and I want y’all to swap it with the one in the living room.

DeAndre raised his phone, I was about to call my girl.

Kareem rubbed his stomach, And I gotta use the bathroom, Mo. Get Lamar.

Lamar just got here, Mo said, Come do what I asked. Joquese need a place to sleep.

    It’s Joq, He corrected.

I call you Joquese because that’s your name, Mo said, I ain’t changing my ways for you.

    Joq laughed, Yes ma’am.

Mo snapped her fingers, DeAndre...Kareem, let’s go.

DeAndre and Kareem started out of the room and for some reason started to bicker with each other as usual. They left the room and Lamar found himself alone with Joq. Lamar was so nervous around him he had no idea what to do with himself. Lamar decided to unpack his bag and put his things into a drawer.

How did you get here? Joq asked.

My mom drove me, Lamar said.

You don’t have a car? Joq asked.

Lamar nodded his head, Yeah, but me and my mom share it. You?

I drive but Kareem and I flew in, Joq said.

You spent money on a plane ticket to come spend the summer with a woman you don’t know?

I just really needed to get away for the summer, Joq said, Kareem like to get niggas in trouble. He started this big thing back home with this dope head. All of a sudden this nigga is always trying to fight me and Kareem. So we both here to lay low for the summer. Everybody seem cool here.

You saying that now, Lamar said, But by the end of the summer we get annoying.

Joq laughed, You know who you look like?

    Who?

The dude from the movie...Will Smith’s son, Joq said.

No, I don’t. I’m tired of hearing that, Lamar said.

    "It’s true.
