About this ebook

Creatures of the Night and Santa’s Christmas duties don’t mix. Every myth and bedtime story tells you so.

But on Christmas Eve, when the Elves walked off the job over pension rights, it was time for me—Irwin, the only vampire on Santa’s payroll, despite recent diversity initiatives—and my trusty team to help out. Just deliver a few parcels, Santa asked me. Just help out on your local patch. Just for one night.

Armed with my reluctance to face all that human sentimentality, and accompanied by a wise-cracking werewolf and an unruly fairy with a taste for vodka, I did my best. Honest.

But we were heading for disaster until I came face-to-face with cute babysitter Benny. It’s Santa’s Number One Rule—no interaction with the clients. But Benny somehow managed to upset my appetite, inflame my libido, and restore my faith in the Christmas spirit, with one cheeky smile and a tasty body piercing.

It’s Christmas, and the show must go on!

A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2016 Advent Calendar "Bah Humbug."

Clare London

Clare took the pen name London from the city where she lives, loves, and writes. A lone, brave female in a frenetic, testosterone-fuelled family home, she juggles her writing with the weekly wash, waiting for the far distant day when she can afford to give up her day job as an accountant. She’s written in many genres and across many settings, with novels and short stories published both online and in print. She says she likes variety in her writing while friends say she’s just fickle, but as long as both theories spawn good fiction, she’s happy. Most of her work features male/male romance and drama with a healthy serving of physical passion, as she enjoys both reading and writing about strong, sympathetic and sexy characters.Clare currently has several novels sulking at that tricky chapter 3 stage and plenty of other projects in mind . . . she just has to find out where she left them in that frenetic, testosterone-fuelled family home. All the details and free fiction are available at her website. The elves are on strike, and Santa has to enlist the help of other paranormal creatures who live in the North Pole to get all of the Christmas gifts delivered - in this case, Irwin, a vampire; Wulf, a werewolf, and a sprite whose name I can't remember off the top of my head (sorry). But while delivering gifts, the trio run into a human, Benny, whom Irwin finds delectable in more than one way.Honestly, I liked the character of Wulf more than I did either Irwin or Benny. I could totally get behind a story featuring Wulf. ;) As it is, Irwin and Benny hook up fast (not that that's a surprise - the story is only about thirty pages long), and I never really felt anything for either of them. It was an okay read, but something I won't remember the details about later (I already forgot the sprite's name!). This is the first Dreamspinner Press advent calendar I have participated in, and I am looking forward to a month full of wintery stories!

What a delightful surprise – a paranormal Christmas story that is funny, sweet, and has some very hot moments to boot. The idea of having “creatures of the night” being recruited to help distribute Christmas gifts when the Elves and Gnomes Division goes on strike over pension rights, of all things, is hilarious. It’s how a vampire, a werewolf, and a dark-humored sprite end up as a team that is ideally suited to the task. As Irwin, the hot vampire, puts it: “We can come and go at will. We’re used to moving in the darkness, used to being hidden in the shadows.”

Irwin is trying to do a good job. He is the only vampire on Santa’s payroll, and he is determined to play by the rules – some of which made me laugh out loud. Irwin despises human sentimentality – until he meets Benny, the babysitter who catches the team in the middle of an otherwise standard package delivery. How is Irwin supposed to resist the temptation of making out – and more –with a human who has a vampire fetish?

Irwin isn’t. Going to resist, I mean. It just isn’t possible, and as he says, “it has been sooo long” since he last indulged. What follows is more hilarity, some unplanned extra gifts that are not covered by the official budget, and a scene in the bushes with activities that are not approved according to the manual, but that make Benny and Irwin very happy indeed. Merry Christmas!

If you like your Christmas stories to be of the paranormal kind, if you enjoy humor with your romance, and if you’re looking for a read that is, above all, very entertaining, then you will probably like this short story as much as I do. I’d like more Benny and Irwin, please, Clare!

A gorgeous, flirty slice of Christmas. A perfect short read for the festive season, with well explored characters, a supernatural world that makes sense and a great romance that kept me hooked right to the end. I'd love to read more.
