    Chapter One

Watch out! A man screamed. His voice signaled trouble. Brice Bender, who was staring at the quarter moon, turned in the direction of the voice to see a man wearing a black jogging suit running towards him. Unbelievably, it had been seconds before that he heard running footsteps. Brice faced a stranger that was so close; he felt the wind on his face.

The stranger had suddenly broken the silence, not with a scream of dying, but with a scream of warning. He had warned Brice to get off of the streets. It was a warning that Brice did not heed.

The sun had gone down two hours before leaving deserted streets. Any form of human life had disappeared into concrete shelters or barricaded basements designed to keep
