Author

Jessica Kelly

Author.  Dreamer.  Entrepreneur. That's how Jessica Kelly describes herself.  Just like the main character in her first book, Trick Play, Jessica believes that hard work is the key to success.  Luckily, though, creating new characters and new plot twists doesn't feel like work to her!  Jessica has always had a passion for writing, and she has dreamed of becoming a successful author for more years than she can count. So what about the "Entrepreneur" part? That proves just how serious Jessica is about turning her dream into reality.  Her goal isn't to write a book or two in her spare time.  Instead, she's focused on building a successful writing career from the ground up.  She's not content to JUST have a dream.  She's willing to do whatever it takes to make it come true. Jessica began living the dream the moment she started writing Trick Play.  When she's not dreaming up new story ideas, this native Floridian can be found spending quality time with friends and family, soaking up the sun on the beach, and -- of course -- reading. Jessica loves hearing from her readers.  Connect with her on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/jessicakellyauthor or on Twitter at http://twitter.com/WritingJessica

    Tight End - Jessica Kelly

    Chapter 1

Let's cut right to the chase.  What's it like to be football's biggest and richest star?

Heath smiled.  Roy Dangerfield had gotten his own show on SportsChannel because of his no-holds-barred approach to interviews.  Everyone knew how much Roy loved making famous professional athletes squirm underneath the bright TV studio lights.

But Heath had no intention of squirming.  Squirming wasn't in his DNA.

TV lights, stadium lights, flashes from paparazzi cameras—he'd thrived underneath all of them.  That's just how it is when you're born into the billionaire Montgomery family.  You stand tall and succeed in the spotlight.  Period.

What's it like?  It's pretty freaking awesome, Heath chuckled.

Roy let out a big belly laugh.  We already knew that, Heath!  How about you give us a few more details?  My viewers are dying to know what a day in the life of Heath Montgomery is really like.  The fancy cars, the hot chicks, the giant wads of hundred dollar bills.  Don't leave anything out!

There's a lot of hard work involved, Heath explained.  During the season, I spend hours at practice and hours watching game films.  And during the off-season, I spend hours training for the next season.  Playing football is in my blood.  I crave winning as much as I crave oxygen.

You've certainly done plenty of winning, Roy said.  Two Super Bowl trophies with the San Diego Stingrays, an NFL MVP award, and if you keep at this same pace, your stats will make you football's all-time greatest tight end by the time you turn thirty.  Not too shabby.

I'm a lucky guy, Heath smiled.  I've got one hell of a life.

Your personal life is on fire, too, Roy pointed out.  That girlfriend of yours is a stunner.  I'm sure you get plenty of help recovering from all of those hard workouts, if you know what I mean, he winked.

Heath couldn't do anything but chuckle and shake his head.  Roy, you wouldn't know tact if it jumped up and bit you in the ass, Heath thought to himself before rattling off the same answer he always gave whenever reporters asked him about his love life.  Violet's a great girl.  We've been together ever since our days at Texas A&M University, long before the NFL came calling.

Oh yeah, Roy snorted, you were just a regular college kid back then.  As regular as a famous billionaire can be.

I'm hoping she loves me for more than my family's money, Heath teased.

Yeah, yeah, I'm sure she does, the brash TV personality teased back.  What a douche bag, Heath thought to himself.

We've got to take a quick commercial break, Roy said, suddenly changing gears.  But after that, we're going to dig into the X's and O's.  Stay tuned, folks!  More with Heath Montgomery in just a minute!

As soon as he saw a commercial start running on the monitor next to him, Heath let out a sigh of relief.  The toughest part of the interview was over.  He'd be happy to talk football strategy all day long.  Hell, he considered it part of his job as an NFL star to sit down for interviews.  But Roy Dangerfield—along with everyone else—was obsessed with his personal life.  He didn't want to share every detail with the world.  He liked his privacy.

But when you're last name is Montgomery, privacy is the last thing people want to give you.

    Chapter 2

    Huddle up, fellas!

Heath adjusted his helmet and tried to quickly catch his breath while his quarterback, Ty McCoy, told everyone in the huddle which play they were going to run next.  The San Diego sun was a scorcher—especially in the middle of August, when the Stingrays practiced twice a day to get ready for the upcoming season—but he didn't care.  As sweltering as it was, he'd run as many plays as Coach Kinsley wanted.  The football field was his happy place.  Others may have hated the sweat, mud, and exhaustion that accompanied a long, hot practice, but all of that stuff fueled him.  Anytime he felt tired, he forced himself to work even harder.  Pushing his body to the limit had become an addiction over the years.  He loved seeing just how far he could go.

Coach Kinsley blew his whistle a few seconds later, and Heath and his teammates jogged out to the middle of the field and lined up.  Heath smiled as the ball was snapped because this play was designed for him.  He darted across the field, raced past the defender who was supposed to be covering him, and turned around just in time to see the ball spiraling towards him.  He reached up, snagged the ball out of the sky, and sprinted all the way into the end zone.

Nice job, Montgomery! Coach Kinsley yelled.  The rest of you pansies can learn a lesson from your tight end!  Never stop hustling!

Hey Montgomery! Eddie Jagger shouted from the sidelines. Quit making the rest of us look bad!

Heath looked over at him and shook his head with disgust.  Jagger seemed like a nice enough guy, but he wasn't exactly known for being a hard worker.

The only one making you look bad, Jagger, is you! Heath shouted back.  He tried to chuckle as he said it, but he wasn't kidding.  Jagger had a chip on his shoulder, and it bugged the shit out of Heath.  Ditch the attitude,
