      Chapter 1

      Right this way, Ms. Gutierrez.

      How bad is it? she asked as the nurse led her down a hallway that looked like it went on forever.

      I'm going to be honest, it's not great, the nurse answered.  But you'll need to talk to the doctor about the specifics.

      As soon as Veronica followed the nurse into his hospital room, she gasped.  He looked like something out of a horror film.  There was dried blood caked to his chest.  His skin was pale with a twinge of gray to it.  There were about a million tubes and wires connected to him.  She watched as drips made their way out of an IV bag and into his arm.  Every time the ventilator let out a puff, she could see his chest rise ever so slightly.  The police had told her he'd been shot, but the reality of it hadn't really hit her until this very moment.

      Amazingly, his face was the only part of his body that hadn't been ravaged by bullets.  Even though part of it was covered by the ventilator mask, when she looked down at his face, she couldn't deny that it was really him.  She almost wished that his face had been mangled, so that her eyes could trick her brain into thinking that it was someone else lying in that bed.

      He's not stable, the nurse explained.  We've already closed the open wounds in his chest so that they don't force his lungs to collapse.  The doctor is waiting on the results of his CT scan now, to see if there's any internal bleeding.

      Oh my god, Veronica gasped.

      I'll let the doctor know you're here, the nurse said before turning and leaving the room.

      As soon as the nurse was gone, Veronica felt utterly alone.  The constant beep of all the machines he was attached to sounded more like fog horns.  Each one thundered through her head.  Every couple of seconds, she got a very loud reminder of everything that had happened.

      How did we get here? she whispered to him, even though she knew full well that he couldn't answer her. 

      He was unconscious, which was a cruel twist of irony.  She desperately wanted him to wake up, but she knew he was better off lying there with no conscious idea of what was happening to him.  There was no way he could be awake right now—not after everything he'd been through.  The police had told her that the shootout at Belle de Mer was quick.  She could see for herself that it didn't take much time to do colossal damage.

      I love you.  I hope that wherever your mind is right now, you at least know how much I love you.  You have to fight to stay alive, she whispered.  Because it can't end like this.  The last conversation we had can't be the last things we ever to say to each other.  Those things were horrible.  I would give anything to go back in time and change it.

      The beeping machines were the only reply she got.  She turned her face away from his bedside.  She had to.  She didn't want this sight etched in her memory forever.  Seeing him like this was horrible enough, but seeing him like this every time she closed her eyes for the rest of her life would be downright sickening.  It would destroy her.

      She took a deep breath.  This isn't about you, she told herself.  You have to be here for him, no matter what.  If you really love him, you have to turn and face him. 

      She turned back around and whispered through tears, I'm here for you.  You know that, right?  I'm not leaving your side.

      She gingerly placed her hand on his, hoping it would spark some kind of reaction.  But suddenly, before her wish had a chance to become reality, a group of doctors and nurses came running into the room.

      We have to get him into surgery! one of the doctors shouted at her.

      What's going on?! she screamed.

      His CT scan shows massive internal bleeding, one of the doctors explained.  We need to get him down to the operating room now!

      Oh my god! Veronica cried.  Her hand was still on his.

      Please back up, ma'am, so that we can get to the patient, a nurse barked at her.

      Veronica froze.  She didn't want to let go of him.  What if this was the last time she ever saw him?  What if he died on the operating table?  She was no doctor, but just from looking at him, her fears didn't seem that far-fetched.  Was this it?  Was this the end?

      Ma'am, please! another doctor yelled as he grabbed onto her arm and pulled her away from the bed.
