Author

Jessica Kelly

Author.  Dreamer.  Entrepreneur. That's how Jessica Kelly describes herself.  Just like the main character in her first book, Trick Play, Jessica believes that hard work is the key to success.  Luckily, though, creating new characters and new plot twists doesn't feel like work to her!  Jessica has always had a passion for writing, and she has dreamed of becoming a successful author for more years than she can count. So what about the "Entrepreneur" part? That proves just how serious Jessica is about turning her dream into reality.  Her goal isn't to write a book or two in her spare time.  Instead, she's focused on building a successful writing career from the ground up.  She's not content to JUST have a dream.  She's willing to do whatever it takes to make it come true. Jessica began living the dream the moment she started writing Trick Play.  When she's not dreaming up new story ideas, this native Floridian can be found spending quality time with friends and family, soaking up the sun on the beach, and -- of course -- reading. Jessica loves hearing from her readers.  Connect with her on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/jessicakellyauthor or on Twitter at http://twitter.com/WritingJessica

    Island Magic - Jessica Kelly

    Chapter 1

    ––––––––

Damn! Beau hollered as he fought the ship's wheel.  We're losing the stern!

    Steer thirty degrees, Beau!

    We're losing buoyancy, Cody!

The gas bubbles are taking it, Beau!  12 o'clock! 12 o'clock!

    Shit!  We're dropping, Cody!  Dropping!

Oh hell no!  Cody yelled, grabbing the wheel alongside Beau.  Give it power!

This is it!  Beau throttled Intrépide. Come on girl.  This is it!

Cody sensed the release, then sensed the leveling stern.  She's free, Beau!

Not yet! Beau hollered.  She's not free yet!  Intrépide lunged forward, then abruptly settled.

She is now, Cody, Beau said a few moments later, still grasping the wheel as if their lives depended on it.

Hang on!  Suddenly, Cody could hardly believe his eyes.  Instinctively ducking, he watched as the giant steam and ash column just ahead blanketed the sea.

    Lava fragments?

More like flaming projectiles, Cody said scanning the area.  Mostly reducing to steam now, he said, regaining his senses.  We have to find them!  He raced to the bow and searched the waters with his binoculars.  Nothing, he shuddered under his breath.  Anything on instruments?

Too much turbulence! Beau shouted.  We've lost of literally every image, every scan.

Give it a blast! Cody shouted back.  If they can’t see us, maybe they can hear us.  He intensified his concentration on the waters to their west.  Shit, he muttered.  Not a trace.

Port side!  Port side! Beau hollered moments later.  Toss him a life saver!

Cody raced port side, lifesaver in hand, and tossed it to the swimmer.  Taylor, he gasped, watching desperately as the waves pounded the diver.  And then, in an instant, he was back, grasping at the ring, signaling.

He has it!  Cody grabbed hold of the line and pulled.  I have him!

Here let me help, Beau said as he raced over from the bridge.

Take it, Cody said indicating the line.  I can grab him.  Stretching, Cody took hold of the lifesaver and pulled Taylor onto the diving platform.  Steady, Taylor, he said as he slipped off his equipment.  You'll be fine.

Ty! Taylor gasped.  Where's Ty?  And Paige?

We'll find them, Taylor, Beau said guiding him to the open deck.

Leave me be!  You have to find them!

I'm on it! Beau hollered resuming his search.  When did you last see him?

Just before... the... explosion, Taylor stammered.  He stared at Cody, obviously bewildered.  What the hell happened?

It was a volcano, Taylor.  You didn’t see anything?

I don't remember.  Wait.  Taylor dropped his head.  The vents.  We saw the vents.

Volcanic vents, Cody said scanning the horizon.  I'd say you saw them just before she blew.

Yes, I remember now.  The bubbles exploded.  And then after that, I think I went black.

But you made it back, Taylor.  And so will Ty and Paige.

They have to, Beau, he whispered.

    Cody!  Two o'clock!

Shit!  Cody peered through his binoculars.  You’re right, Beau.  Ease her closer.  Cody watched intently as the ship edged toward the figure in the water.  It's Ty!  Cody grabbed another ring.  Get her closer, Beau!

Beau guided Intrépide closer.  Within seconds, Cody tossed the ring to Ty.  Take it Ty, he begged under his breath.

    He has it!

Thank God, Cody replied as he pulled on the line.  Steady... Steady.  Seconds later, Ty was in his grasp.

I have him, Beau said steadying Ty, pulling him on board.  We have you, Ty.

    Paige!  Do you have Paige?

    We don't.

    Why not!

We lost her before the explosion, Ty.  Do you remember?

Ty pulled on his tanks.  Bewildered, he looked back at Cody.  Back at the vents.  We lost her there.

We'll find her, Ty.  Just like we found you and Taylor.

She was ahead of us, Ty mumbled as if to regain his thought process.  Taylor, remember?  She was ahead of us.  And then—

She was heading west.  Towards the harbor.  Ty dropped his head.  Oh fuck!  Right into it.

Maybe not, Cody said trying to calm him.  We don’t know precisely where the cone is.

But I saw the vents!  How far could it be?

Relax, Ty, Beau said patting him on the back.  She's a pro.  She'll find her way out of it.

You don't know that, Ty said rising to his feet.  For all we know, it carried her under.

Stop, Ty, Taylor said rising to his feet.  Have some faith.

    Chapter 2

    ––––––––

Ty adjusted his binoculars and looked west.  Paige was more important to him than life itself.  Take me if you must.  Please, just spare Paige.  He focused ahead, across the discolored water. Fortunately the seas had settled down.  It would be much easier to spot her now.  And easier for her, he thought, reflecting back to the fury of the waves crashing over him.

Islands straight ahead.  Two hundred and seventy degrees, due west.

His heart pounded in his chest.  There was no time to spare.  Beau, can you stop her?  Ty raced up the ladder to the observation platform.  Give me a few.  He steadied himself and zeroed in on the shallow islands.  Jasmine and Hibiscus, he whispered, where's Paige?  The wind whistled as it cut across the deck.  Is that your answer?  Ty adjusted the lens and zoomed in on Jasmine.

Paige!  Paige, is that you?  Ty stared at his target.  Was he so intent on finding her that now he was seeing things?

    One o'clock, Taylor hollered.

Get down, Ty.  I'm moving in closer.

Ty jumped down to the main deck and zeroed in on the target.  It's her.  I know it's her, he said trying to convince himself.

    Grab the IRB!

Yes, the boat, Ty stammered before running for the inflatable rescue boat.

It's her!  I can see her from up here! Cody hollered from the bridge.

Ty released the inflatable, jumped in, and started the 25HP engine.  I'm coming, Paige!  Frantic, he raced to the island.  Minutes later, Ty steadied the boat on the edge of the beach and ran to her.

Paige!  Paige, he whispered bending over her.  Overwhelmed, it took him a few seconds to realize that she was unconscious.  Oh my God, what's happened to you?

Ty checked her vitals.  She was breathing.  Baby, he whispered.  Can you hear me?  Ty examined her for wounds.  Thankfully, there were none visible.  Although he dared not move her.  God forbid she'd broken—

He took a cloth from the boat and dabbed her head.  I need to bring you back, my Paige, he whispered as he stroked her with the cool moist cloth.

Ty, she whispered after a few minutes.  Ty.

Oh my God, Paige!  Can you hear me?

She opened her deep blue eyes and looked up at him.  Ty.  I love you.

I love you too, baby.  Now be still.  He watched as she slowly regained consciousness.

I'm OK, she said reaching for him.

    Careful, Paige.

    But—

    Paige, do you hurt anywhere?

My head.  She raised her arm and stroked her forehead with the back of her hand.  I have an awful headache.

Do you remember what happened, Paige?  You were unconscious.

No, she said closing her eyes.

Can you move your legs, Paige?

What?  She opened her eyes and stared back at him.  Why couldn’t I move my legs?

I don't know, but can you? He asked.

Of course I can, silly, she said slowly wiggling her foot.  And, no, it doesn't hurt.

Thank God, he whispered.  He held her, cradling her.

I'm going to take you back to the ship.  I'll carry you to the lifeboat.  You just let me know when you're ready.

I'm a little dizzy, she answered.

Do you remember how you made it to the beach?

I remember swimming, she whispered after a few moments.  It was really hard.  The currents were so strong.

Very, he said.  But you made it.

I did, didn’t I? she said half-grinning.  Or maybe I just washed up.

Maybe, he said as he hugged her.  Either way God was looking out for you.

And you?  How did you get here?

"They pulled me on board Intrépide.  Over there, he said pointing to the ship just offshore.  Taylor too."

Thank God, she whispered, taking his hand and gently kissing it.  You know it was a volcano.

A very unexpected volcano, he answered.

I saw the vents.  I tried to swim back to you.  I wanted you to see them, she whispered.  Who knew the cone was about to blow, right?

Who knew, he answered, smiling.  Just a few vents.  Right up your alley, my Paige.

Harmless vents, yes.  Until the earth rumbled.

"Paige, I need to get you back to Intrépide."

Help me up.  I can get to the boat on my own.

Before he could object she was halfway up.  Steady, Paige.  You were unconscious a few minutes ago.

I'm fine.  Really, she said as he lifted
