      This book begins in the present time with Maddies’ sister ready to come live with her, a drug addict who was terribly injured in a car accident and now is going to live with her. Just as we go about dealing with all that is required we learn about some letters written in the early 1700’s by a Talbot woman, and before we know it we are there with Celeste and her sister Berta.Wait a minute I was absorbed in Maddie and Nicole’s story and now I’m in the 1700’s, and enjoying this part of the story when we are back in the present, you are going to see that the two stories of the same family have a lot in common. I got so I didn’t want to leave either era but then I loved where I was, whether the past or present.I was enjoying this book so much that I didn’t want it to end, and wanting it to go on and on, a really great read!I received this book through Harvest House Publishers and was not required to give a positive review.

      My Sister’s Prayer by Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould is the second book in Cousins of the Dove series. Madeline “Maddee” Talbot is twenty-seven years old and has a busy life (and it’s about to get busier). Her sister, Nicole gets into a car accident (because of drugs) and needs around the clock care (broke both her legs). She is staying with their Nana (who has a big house and money for caregivers), but Nicole feels smothered. Nicole wants to stay with Maddee (she is whining). Maddee finally agrees to let her stay with her with a few conditions (daily AA meetings are a part of it). Maddee is a little nervous because Nicole was a drug addict, and Maddee is not sure how she will be able to care for Nicole (she has a full-time job). Nicole has doctor appointments, AA meetings, and physical therapy. The two sisters were close when they were little but grew apart after Nicole started her downward spiral with drugs. It all goes back to the dead body that they found in a cabin when they were little (along with their cousins Rene and Danielle). By the time the girls returned with their parents, the body had vanished. No one believed their story. The case is still unsolved. But there is new evidence (thanks to the cousins) and Detective Ortiz is looking into the case. Can solving this case help heal Nicole and the breach between the two sisters? While the two are staying together, Nana gives them some family letters and journals to read. She wants them to go through the papers together.Celeste Talbot has always done what she has been told to do. But she fell in love with Lt. Jonathan Gray who has been recently assigned to the New World (he had to leave without her). Celeste is running away to be with him. What Celeste does not expect is her sister, Berta to follow her. Celeste does not have enough money for the passage, and signs on as an indentured servant (for four years) to pay for her voyage. Celeste knows Jonathan will buy her contract when they arrive in Williamsburg. Celeste discovers Berta on the ship. Berta ends up very ill and needs constant care. When The Royal Mary arrives in the New World, they land in Norfolk (instead of Williamsburg). The captain sells their contracts and the two girls end up in different cities. Celeste has to find a way to get in touch with Jonathan. Celeste promised Berta she would rescue her as soon as possible. Celeste is in for a big dose of reality. Will she be able to reunite with Berta? Can she find Jonathan and get out of her contract? Join these two sets of sisters on their journey of discovery in My Sister’s Prayer.My Sister’s Prayer goes back and forth from present day to the past to tell the story. It is told in the first person (which I really dislike, but after a while I do not notice it). While this is the second book in the series, it can be read alone. The book has very good writing (as usual for these two great authors) and the story draws in the reader. It deals with forgiveness, adversity, the impetuousness of youth, and trusting that God has a plan for your life. You can see the parallels between the two sets of sisters as you read the novel. I give My Sister’s Prayer 4 out of 5 stars (I liked it). Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould did a very good job at capturing the historical time period. Their writing is very descriptive. I can envision what they are describing. Past events are not wrapped up in My Sister’s Prayer. We will have to await the next novel to find out more about the man that died in the cabin. I will definitely be reading more books by these two authors.I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review. The comments and opinions expressed are strictly my own.

      My Sister’s Prayer by award-winning authors Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould continues the saga of the Talbot family. This time sisters are the focus of the novel with the dual storylines of Celeste and Berta and Maddee and Nicole. The setting is Virginia, but the times the sisters live in could not be more different. Celeste and Berta are new immigrants to the Virginia colony, and Maddee and Nicole’s story is contemporary. But despite the differences in culture and technology, there are many parallels that can be drawn — struggles of the heart are not so different across the centuries. My book club, By The Book, chose this as their February selection, and it got a unanimous thumbs up! We had a great discussion.There were several things we liked about My Sister’s Prayer. Number one is the historical setting of Celeste and Berta’s story. Our group includes a 4th grade teacher who loves history. She read many excerpts to her class in their discussions on indentured servants. This topic, as well as the general deprivations and dangers of immigration in the early 1700s, generated a great conversation.We liked the likable characters and disliked those who were either cads, bad guys, or generally annoying . There were a number of minor characters that gave depth to the main characters’ stories. We also liked the romances that developed. The continuing mystery of the murder at the cabin when the cousins were children provided a connecting thread for the contemporary plots. The only criticism we had was that the ending seemed rushed — everything wrapped up in just a few pages.We recommend My Sister’s Prayer and are looking forward to book 3 in the series, My Daughter’s Legacy, which is due out in July of this year.Recommended.Audience: older teens and adults.

      My Sister's Prayer by Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould is a wonderful historical novel. Although second in the Cousins of the Dove series, it is easily a stand-alone read. Clark and Gould tell the stories of two sets of sisters, one in the early 1700s and the other in present-day Virginia and connect these four lives through a series of old letters. The sisters are portrayed as having parallel lives in the sense that one sister is perhaps more of the tow-the-line, have to protect and fix the problems of the other sister who is a bit more wild and adventurous. Many troubles abound in both time periods and the authors deal realistically with slave trading and human trafficking in the earlier time period and drug addiction in the contemporary story. The characters are strong and likable and true to life--each with their strengths and their foibles. One sister is described as "a super-organized neat freak with an innate need to control the world." Devotion to each other and a strong faith in God helps both sets of sisters to work through their difficulties and trust that God will bring order to the chaos and reveal the truth. This compelling story is full of history, romance, and mystery--a good combination to keep the pages turning. This reader is looking forward to the next book in the series. I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

      Gould and Clark Always Equal Gold!!Mindy Starns Clark. Leslie Gould. With these two names as co-authors, the only question one needs to ask before buying is, which book in a series is it?My Sister's Prayer is #2 in the Cousins of the Dove series. Written in first person POV, the reader meets two pairs of sisters, their thrilling stories alternating by scenes of present-day and the early 1700's Virginia.Celeste Talbot is the obedient sister, Berta the wild one. However, one choice lands the young Talbot maidens in a strange land with more trouble around every corner than imaginable.How could such a good girl go so wrong, and will she choose bitterness or forgiveness when the opportunity comes? The colonies are full of unsavory characters. Will the sisters trust those worthy of their friendship and love?Meanwhile, in present day, perfectionist Maddee brings her sister Nicole to her house to recover from a drug-induced accident. The girls share a horrible secret from the past, but can Maddee trust Nicole, whose life has spiraled out of control since then? How does the reading of the eighteenth century Talbot sisters' letters influence the relationships of the twenty-first century Talbot sisters?First, I would buy a Clark/Gould collaboration without giving any thought to the subject matter. They make such a dynamic fiction duo!!The writing just envelops the reader and carries one along, just as if one is caught in a river's raging current, and just as fickle. One moment I'm excited, the next holding my breath, the next trying to tell characters how to act(they don't listen!), the next crying.Finally, I finish the book and am spit up on the shore, gasping for breath, reeling from all that has happened. Incredibly, I wish I could start at the beginning and relive this wonderful,faith-filled historical with its present day counterpart all over again.I gratefully received an e-copy of this book from NetGalley, plus I bought my own paperback version to keep on the shelf.
