The Groping Ghost
Strange are the ways of the unknown-but even stranger still is the mind of man! What was the horror that lurked at White Mansion? On what pursuit did it wail and howl, forever seeking, searching? Twin brothers held its secret, and only they could answer it, for the terror that reached out in hideous coils came from something unearthly.
Ghost-Tales-panel-01.jpgOne stormy night, the distinguished member's of the Adventurers' Club are discussing the supernatural. Of course, all these occult phenomena are merely hallucinations!
one of the gentlemen retorted.
Or else a product of ignorant, superstitious minds!
laughed another.
Gentlemen, I have been listening to you for some time now!
a voice from across the room returned. What if I were to tell you a ghost story-a story that actually happened? Would you believe me?
Everyone in the room turned toward the speaker, for Joseph Coleman, the famous metaphysicist was renowned for his genius. Of course, Joseph! But only if you prove conclusively that ghosts do indeed exist!
a heavy-set man in glasses stated.
Go on, man! We're waiting!
another urged impatiently.
Well, you see it all started many years ago,
Joseph began, before I met Kevin and Albert White in college. They were twin brothers, but as different as day is from night.
Kevin was steady, reliable, clean cut, while Albert was greedy, cunning, and scheming. From the very first, Kevin and I became best friends, a relationship not even his own twin brother could break.
How about going to the lecture tonight, Kevin? It's by Professor Conti, the famous hypnotist!
I asked, excited.
Fine! That subject always interests me!
Kevin agreed.
Gradually, the two of us became immersed in the study of the supernatural and the occult, which Albert considered a waste of time. We developed an overwhelming amount of knowledge between the two of us.
But upon graduating, there had to be a parting of the ways. I was truly sorry to see my best friend leave.
Goodbye, Joseph! I'm off to Maine!
Kevin explained, embracing me. There's a research job waiting for me. Looks like I will be a scientist yet!
Write to me, old man!
I returned.
After a few letters, I lost touch with Kevin. The years flew by, and I became a well known investigator of occult phenomena. Then one day, I had to pass through the home town of my old friend.
It will be wonderful to see Kevin again,
I thought to myself as I was walking toward his house, Brrr! What a lonely, foreboding place this is! Oh, well-seeing him once again will cheer me up.
I proceeded to knock on the door. A somewhat frail looking woman opened it.
Excuse me,
I proceeded. I hope this is the residence of Kevin White. The last letter I received from him was from this address. I'm Joseph Coleman.
Then came a voice from deeper within the doorway, Joseph? My old friend! By all means let him in. Let him in!
When I stepped into the entryway, I spotted a man who appeared aged well beyond his years. A young woman was guiding him into the room by his arm, supporting him.
Kevin! What-what has happened to you?
I inquired with a sense of urgency in my voice.
Yes, Joseph. I'm blind and disfigured, I know. It happened a few years ago,
he explained. An experiment I had been conducting blew up in my face. But at least I have Susan.
The shock of seeing my once vibrant friend like this was unnerving, but somehow I managed to hide it. I now turned my attention to the beautiful girl next to Kevin-the girl that was his wife.
Ghost-Tales-panel-06.jpgShe's been everything to me, Joseph,
he explained. I would have died long ago if it weren't for her love and devotion.
Kevin has told me so much about you, Joseph,
she said. I have studied your research in the field of the supernatural. Welcome to White Manor.
And of course this is my brother, Albert, and his wife, Joyce,
Kevin added, gesturing toward the couple. Joyce was the haggard looking woman that opened the door upon my arrival.
You haven't changed a bit, Albert,
I said. Nor have you, Joseph,
he returned, looking in my direction.
Later that evening at dinner...It's not fair!
an irate Albert retorted. We're twins but you inherit the estate! You're the master of this house. You-a blind cripple!"
I've given you everything, George!
Kevin shot back. What more do you want from me?
Bah! I don't know why Joyce and I stay in this house!
Albert returned, his frustration building.
"I'm sorry for my brother's rudeness, Joseph. These tantrums aren't new I'm afraid. I've offered to give him all the money he wants, but he never leaves me-or this house. He's upset, that's
