      Ella, wake up! Shay whisper-screeched.

      Was she dreaming? Shay’s voice sounded so distant, and the darkness was all she could see. But her body shook, and fingers encircled her upper arm.

      If this was a dream, it was too real.

      Wake up! Wake up! Panic intertwined with her words. She was frantic, scared. Maybe even a little desperate.

      As much as it pained her, Ella blinked a few times. There, just outside the windshield, were the faces of the undead. She jumped, lids springing wide open as she reflexively scrambled to get away. But she was stuck in a chair—no, a seat. In the pod.

      Oh, yeah. The crash, her mind said, filling in the blanks.

      Peering to her left, she couldn’t help but notice the door was wide open. Two zoms had just figured that out, too; they reached inside, grabbing at Ella. Shay screamed, then abruptly stopped. Ella, however, didn’t have time to scream. She barely had time to react.

      Swiveling around in her seat, she used both of her legs—one foot for each zombie—and kicked them in their ugly, rotting faces. Once. Twice. Three, four, five times. Until her shoes made squishing noises, and the zoms stopped fighting.

      Without weapons, she and Shay were screwed. They needed something more than their hands, feet, knees, and elbows for fighting these creatures. A laser gun would be nice. So would a human-made gun. Or a machete. Or a knife. At this point, she’d take just about anything.

      Slightly winded, Ella said, "We have to get
