CHAPTER ONE
I’ll meet you 100 feet above where the three river branches intersect,
Tim told me. I hovered there, looking around at the lights of Chicago at night. I’d only been there a minute when his drone came into view.
I see you,
I said.
So what shall we get up to this fine night?
I was looking down the east branch of the Chicago River, a strip of black water walled with magnificently lit skyscrapers and crossed by several road bridges. Race ya,
I said.
You’re on,
Tim said. I dove my drone towards the black water, pulling up at the last second. I poured on the speed as it skimmed the surface, chasing the blurred reflections of the lights of a bridge before passing under it. Looking to my right, I saw Tim’s squarish craft, complete with colorful blinking LEDs for easy visibility, the lights of the riverwalk rushing by in the background. I faced forwards again, the camera on the drone following the movement of my head. Another string of globe-shaped lights along the side of a bridge was about to pass overhead. Climbing steeply, I peeled off to the right, heading over the string of glowing pearls that was the riverwalk, and up over the iconic Michigan Avenue.
I’m right behind you,
Tim said, easily able to keep track of me, since my machine glowed as brightly as his.
Millennium Park?
I asked.
Yep.
All around were columns of light, rising well above our cruising height of 200 feet. We were high enough that unless people on the ground were looking in just the right place, they wouldn’t see us. I accelerated. The park was only three blocks away. Windows flew past on both sides. On my left was the thousand-foot white monolith that was the AON building, and then thin air, as the world-famous park opened up in front of us.
I have some tourists to frighten,
I said.
Right on.
The giant artworks that made up the elegant park were spread out in front of us. My target was the giant, silver oval sculpture known as Cloud Gate. It stood on a wide plaza, and there were people milling about even that late in the evening. I pushed forward on my control stick and was diving towards it. In no time the giant convex mirror-like surface artwork filled up my vision. I saw my lights reflected in it as I pulled out of the dive and raced above shocked, open-mouthed faces. Then, as was our
