Blaze
The sun baked down on Chris’s already tanned skin. The dry heat over the dusty terrain offered no protection. Not that it mattered to him. He was used to high temperatures .
His wavy red hair had grown long and covered his neck. It blew in the gentle breeze. Sweat collected underneath his growing beard. His appearance had changed dramatically since he’d left Erie. As had he.
Chris wasn’t sure exactly where he was. Somewhere in the Pacific Northwest was all he knew. It had been two years since his life had crumbled. Just as long as his bliss had lasted.
Two years had taken him from Erie to the Pacific Ocean, and now he was working his way back to the East Coast. Two years and he still hadn’t found the sorcerer who killed his daughter; who tore apart his marriage. He vowed to search everywhere for Q,
as Chris knew him. Q hadn’t been the one who ordered the attack, but he was the murderer. Both he and whoever put the mark on Chris’s daughter were hard to track.
The night before, Chris had been at a bar in Mountain Home, Idaho, where several magical customers were regulars. They were known throughout the area—not that there were a lot of people in the area. Chris had been meeting with a wizard who had allegedly last seen Q a few months ago. A stretch, but the best thing Chris had at the moment. A lot could happen in a few months.
No one has seen Q,
the old man, Jerry, had said the night before. Despite the heat, he’d worn a denim jacket and long pants and boots. He’d had a black bandana on his head to collect his sweat. Chris was used to these types of guys. The ones who acted rough around the edges but had never been on the opposite end of a punch.
Jerry had taken a sip of his beer and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. He leaned in close to Chris, who tried not to turn his face when the smell of beer came wafting from Jerry’s breath. It’s like she damn near fell off the face of the earth. Used to hang out down by the highway stop and prey on stupid folk.
Yeah?
Chris took a sip of his own drink. So Q was a woman. That was a useful piece of information. But not the reason he was there.
Jerry let out a throaty laugh, still too close for Chris’s comfort. "Used to tell little kids that she’d grant their wishes. Parents started to think she was a pervert. Or some kind of sadistic kidnapper who would be the focus of a 20/20 special in the future. I’m sure the cops were called. So she hightailed it out of there."
Was that the last place you saw her?
Jerry leaned back and reached for his drink. I never said that.
Chris let out a huff of air. Jerry was wasting his time, probably hoping to get another free drink out of him. So what are you saying? What can you tell me about where Q might be now?
What’s the rush, kiddo? Chasing trouble is just plain stupid.
Kiddo.
The word had tested Chris’s patience more than Jerry already was. Nothing made him feel more discredited than being referred to as a kid. That was part of the reason he grew the beard. That, and it protected his face from the sun.
Chris rubbed his beard absently. Okay. It’s obvious Q isn’t here anymore, so I’ll tell you what: I’ll buy your next two drinks if you tell me where Q is heading.
Jerry flashed a yellow smile. Since when did you become my date?
Chris stood and grabbed him by the lapels. I’m not messing around here! Tell me where the hell she went!
Jerry’s eyes widened. Besides the overhead country music playing, the bar was silent and Chris could feel the number of people staring. He briefly closed his eyes, letting out a sigh, and let Jerry go. He sunk back into his seat.
Fixing his shirt, Jerry nodded. Okay. Yeah. Um…last I knew, Q had moved on from kids and was heading east. Said she needed to take a break from the West Coast for now.
East.
Chris hoped she was heading toward Miami, or even New York City. As long as she stayed away from Erie. He couldn’t return home. Nor did he want that bitch anywhere near his family again. What was left of them, at least.
Chris nodded and stood as he pulled a couple of bills out of his pocket and set them on the bar. Jerry had told him all he knew, and frankly, the talk of children was getting to him. If Sophia had never been killed, would Holly have stayed with him? How many kids would they have by now? What would his little girl look like if she had never died?
Before he had a chance to leave, Jerry grabbed his
