FIRST THOUGHTS
As I enter the final year of my undergraduate degree I have found myself achieving just exactly what I wanted from my life at this point and I note that I am holding my own in relation to my peers. This might not sound like the loftiest of goals for a 24 year old but I am proud of where I am. The road has been a lot more difficult than it could have been. This is where the idea for writing this guide comes from. As someone diagnosed with Crohn's Disease at nine years of age, I have realised that I have some insights that can help others travelling the same road. I want to help you and your child get through a life changing event and give you some tips on how to adapt, how to cope and then how to thrive.
Surprisingly enough I feel that, alongside the dark times, Crohn's has left me with some of the best memories I have as well as some of the closest relationships of anyone I know. I guess I’ve come to conclude that in some regards this curse has been a bit of a blessing.
DIAGNOSIS AND DESPAIR
It is my understanding that, at just nine years old, I was diagnosed very young. But in a lot of respects everything surrounding my diagnosis was conspicuously lucky. To start with I was diagnosed within one month of first falling ill. Probably a record for Crohn’s. Initially I presented with all of the standard symptoms of a pretty nasty stomach bug. I had stopped eating and was going to the toilet fifteen or more times a day and so was sent home from the GP with some Imodium and the friendly advice to my mother that I would be fine in a few days. Two weeks down the line I was still most definitely not fine, and was now in severe discomfort verging on pain. To top it all off I was beginning to lose weight quickly.
Having never been a particularly robust or large child this obviously had my parents incredibly worried. Fortunately, instead of spending the next few months or even years bouncing between GP's looking for answers, as I am well aware can happen, my GP immediately referred me to a specialist team dedicated to treating children with Crohn's Disease and I passed into the care of the Royal Free Hospital in London. He did this for one simple reason. Two of his own children had Crohn's and he recognised the pattern.
