    Chapter 1

Annabel Wells sat at the counter in the dragons’ study area as she watched them looking over their latest findings in the newspaper. There had been a new rash of attacks and being a man short, the others needed to pick up the pace if they wanted to stop the Unseen before they attacked everyone remaining in the city. It was drawing too much suspicion from even the normal people who weren’t capable of seeing the dark creatures.

I think we need to block off the western area of the city, Henry said as he passed his finger along certain roads, outlining the area he was talking about. In human form, they had the same hands as a regular person yet Annabel knew when they changed, their fingers were replaced with claws capable of cutting through strong darkness.

Crispin frowned. We can’t do that. The latest have been getting closer to our location so if anything, our resources are better spent on closer defense. He pointed at red dots set up on the map, each one corresponding to an attack they verified as being from one of the Unseen, the dark creatures they were after. The attacks were beginning to get closer and the amount of people harmed was increasing as well

Maybe, but for now we should concentrate our efforts on creating somewhere to hole them up.

That’s what we need – a nearly indestructible pile of Unseen in one area. I’m sure the people in that portion of the city would love your idea, Crispin said sarcastically.

Henry crossed his arms over his chest. You’re not seeing the entire picture then. If they’re all in one place, it’ll be easier to destroy them. We won’t have to spend hours searching for them when we know exactly where to head.

The two men ceased their arguing when they realized the mootness of their point. The Unseen were on a rampage through the city and there was nothing they could do to put a dent in it. Even with them spending countless nights patrolling the streets, Unseen still managed to kill people. A few times the attacks were in broad daylight which is why the dragons decided it was time for a better plan than their current one.

What about Jules and Mandy? Are the knights of any help to us at this point? Annabel asked. Jules was a dragon like Crispin and Henry but he’d recently left with a knight named Mandy to help track down Unseen. Dragons and knights were typically enemies but these particular ones understood the seriousness of the situation and had agreed to help.

Crispin shook his head. Seems the latest run in with the knights was only the beginning. They’ve been dealing with more of the same problems since they returned.

Annabel nodded in understanding. The knights had splintered from one another and everyone was vying to regain control of them. Former knights were coming into power almost every day with handfuls of people following them.

Mandy was one of those knights who had followed someone who claimed to be the new leader yet now she managed to convince some other knights to follow her into making peace with the dragons. That was something which had never been done because knights were sworn killers of dragons. These at least seemed to understand the dragons weren’t the real killers – it was the Unseen and other knights doing the damage. How long this truce would stand wasn’t certain at this point.

Henry leaned in his chair and crossed his arms. He frowned. I don’t like this at all.

I don’t think anyone does, Crispin answered, his eyes remaining on the map in front of him. His eyes searched from one corner to the next as though formulating an idea in his head – one he shook off at the next moment.

Sera, a younger female dragon, appeared in the doorway with a letter in her hand. Henry, there’s something in the mail for you.

That caught the attention of the other three in the room. The dragons were using aliases since they arrived here and no one knew their real names. If something came addressed to Henry, then it was certainly out of the ordinary and worth exploring.

Henry stood and took the letter from her. Annabel craned her neck to see what it said but from her position she couldn’t see anything. He didn’t seem pleased reading it, his eyes scanning the paper twice.

What’s wrong? Sera placed her hand on his shoulder for support. She was Henry’s mate and knew whatever troubled him, she was there.

It’s from the elders, he stated emotionless.

Crispin leaned in his chair. What does it say? Are they finally getting around to apologizing to everyone? It was only a few months prior in which the council decided to come after Crispin and the others on false charges. It took a while for them to convince the elders they weren’t the bad guys in the situation.

    Not quite. They’re reassigning me.

What? Crispin leaned forward immediately, the legs of his chair hitting solidly against the ground.

Are you serious? Sera asked as she grabbed the letter and steered it closer into her line of sight.

He handed it to her. They say they need someone in South America. Not entirely sure where but they want me down there.

Annabel remained stunned by the news. Of everything she expected to be in the letter, she didn’t expect that. Crispin and Henry had battled Unseen for longer than a decade together. It didn’t seem right for the council to split them apart. They were doing a good job of keeping people safe although this little turmoil wasn’t showing it.

They do know I’m mated with you right? They sent for me too right? Sera bit her lip as she looked at him nervously.

I don’t know, Henry said directing his attention from her to Crispin. Did you ask for me to be transferred?

Not at all, Crispin said standing from his position and making
