Chapter 1
Crispin frowned as he checked out the building where he and Henry went earlier to check out reports about the Unseen. The building looked even more deserted than before. There didn’t appear to be any shadows giving an indication anyone had been there in years. It was completely desolate.
They moved. Clever,
he fumed aloud. He looked around in anger, wanting to burn the entire place. He couldn’t believe Annabel went to the Unseen alone. She should’ve known to do something to let him know where she went. This made the search for her spread into the entirety of the city.
Henry and Sera appeared from the other side of the building. Henry shook his head. We didn’t see anything.
Are you guys sure this is the right place?
Sera looked around and thought the same thing as the others.
Crispin nodded. This is it. I remember everything about it. We just… where is she?
He needed some kind of indication what was going on here. Nothing made sense.
Annabel left yesterday and turned herself into the leader of the Unseen, Robert Theodus III as he had been known previously, in an attempt to get them to stop preying upon the humans in the city. She waited until Crispin and the other dragons were busy so no one would stop her. It put her directly where the Unseen wanted her. This was the worst idea she ever had.
How about we set a trap for an Unseen?
Sera suggested. Something that makes one come to us and then we could follow it back to Annabel?
She shrugged as she talked, looking at Crispin for confirmation.
What kind of trap?
Get a human. That’s what the Unseen are after.
He crossed his arms against his chest tightly. I don’t know. I wouldn’t feel right risking a human’s life just so we get a trail where to head to save Annabel.
He knew she wouldn’t support him doing something like this.
What if it was a human who was okay with it?
And where would we find one that’s okay with risking his or her life?
She shrugged again. Maybe Mandy.
Mandy was a knight who teamed up with them previously but was now helping Jules combat the Unseen in the city since they seemed to be everywhere at once. They hadn’t talked with them in a while to see how everything was going but judging by the way things were headed in the city, they were definitely constantly at work. The number of Unseen had dropped drastically and Crispin knew it wasn’t only because of them.
We can ask. I don’t see anyone else wanting to volunteer for that position.
Crispin doubted whether Mandy wanted to do it as well. It wasn’t an easy position to be put in.
Henry reached into his pocket and pulled out a phone. He handed it to Crispin. Call her while we go check things out once again.
He motioned with his head for Sera to follow. The two of them disappeared around the back of the house and out of Crispin’s view.
Holding the phone in his hands, Crispin weighed the responsibility of calling Mandy in his mind. If he did, and something happened, he’d never be able to forgive himself for bringing her into this mess. Not to mention it’d make Jules hate him for the rest of his life.
You could save her yourself,
voice told him inside his mind. The nagging sound attempted to drown his logical reasoning for that of emotion.
He turned his head to the side, attempting not to listen to the voice. It sounded louder than he remembered. Leave me alone.
Don’t be weak. Embrace the new you.
The words swirled around his mind, clouding everything else from getting a chance of being brought to the forefront.
No.
You can’t fight this for long.
I will fight you every day if I have to.
We’ll see.
Crispin frowned, his memory of what happened last time he heard the voice came back strongly to him. He killed dragons and knights alike along with nearly destroying the hatchery where younger dragons were being raised. The rage he flew in was uncontrollable and dominated everything within himself. He couldn’t allow himself to succumb to this again. He was better than what this voice was attempting to make him into.
He opened the address book on Henry’s phone and tapped the button for Jules. He needed to do this before his mind was changed. He raised the phone to his ear and waited for the familiar voice to pick up, running the scenario through his head and the words he needed to say.
Henry. How is it?
Jules asked on the opposite side, his voice sounding cheerful yet rushed.
It’s Crispin.
Oh hey, long time no talk. How’s it going?
Crispin bit his lip. There was no easy way to do this. He just needed to come straight out and ask. We have a problem and… I think Mandy might be the best one for us to have on this
There was a long pause on the opposite end. Finally Jules said, Let me see if I can find her.
Crispin nodded on his side. Okay.
He took a few paces forward, his head bent as he mused over the proper way to put this so Mandy knew he cared about her safety but it was important for her to help them on this mission. The truth was he greatly cared which is why this call made him nervous about what her response would be, for and against.
There was a rustling on the other end of the phone before Mandy asked, Crispin? Are you there?
Yeah, still here.
Jules told me you wanted to ask me something.
He rushed out the words.
