Look, Jess, called Dave, riding in a slow, easy oval, leaning a lot in the curves.  A lazy grin caught and stayed on his face at the sight of his partner, Jesse watching him.  Jess wore that skeptical look of his, one eyebrow raised slightly higher than the other.  He looked like he was trying hard not to be impressed.

The engine thrummed loud and obnoxious, and really, really nice to hear.  Dave could hardly believe the deal he'd gotten on this Harley.  He twisted his head slightly, turning to give Jess another grin.

The sun shone brightly today.  It was almost summer.  Everything felt fresh,  hot, and new, the air burning sweet and pure in his lungs, and a restless, growing feeling pumping inside his eager body, going round his veins with his blood.

You'll barely drive my truck, and now you're riding a bike?

Dave shrugged and gave Jess another sweet smile.  The man never could stay annoyed with him for long if he smiled.

Sure enough, it worked.  He caught the grin and moved forward impulsively, his slim, lithe, strong body suddenly eager and ready.  All right, pull over, and let me on.  He motioned impatiently for Dave to move to the curb instead of riding around in a circle that took in the middle of the whole, sleepy street.  Curtains at nearby houses twitched again.

Dave felt a grin growing inside him.  Glad, for once in his life, for everyone to see him.  It was that sort of day, that sort of reckless day.

He pulled over, put the kickstand down, and was just getting ready to turn off the engine when Jesse hopped onto the bike behind him, slinging an arm around his middle.  Take me for a ride, then, hotshot, he said, real quietly, close to Dave's ear.

You'll get a ride, he threatened.

Tough guy, said Jesse, a laugh in his voice.  He leaned against Dave, almost snuggling against him, like a hug instead of just like he was holding on.

Back off, for pity's sake, growled Dave, worry making his voice rough.  They couldn't do that sort of thing in public.

Yeah, yeah.  Dave could almost hear Jesse rolling his eyes, but he backed off a little.  C'mon, let's see what this thing can do.  He was all business now, but still as reckless and wild as Dave.

Taking his cue, Dave thrummed the engine and roared down the quiet street.  The wind squalled at his hair and face, making him squint and grin.  Sunglasses! he shouted over the wind to Jess.  We'll need sunglasses!

Jess's arm tightened around his middle, and Dave felt him nod against his shoulder.

They'd lived together for the last three years.  Before that, Dave was in Vietnam.  Jesse had a few health issues that kept him from being drafted.

Dave hadn't felt quite right since 'Nam, but he was doing better lately.  They both worked at a lumber mill owned by Jesse's uncle.  Ostensibly, he lived with Jesse to save money, even though really they were committed lovers.  The excuse worked, because everyone knew they were friends, and everyone in town knew Dave was sort of a cheapskate.  He'd been born dirt poor and never quite got over feeling like money was tight.

Except apparently he'd gotten over it enough to buy himself a motorcycle.

At least it's used, he told himself as they bumped up over a big hill and down.  Jesse's arms tightened around his middle, and Dave grinned at the feeling of it.  For a moment, riding off like that, the both of them together, he was on top of the world, and king of it.

Dave regarded the nearly-stale loaf of bread thoughtfully.  He pulled open the door to the fridge and checked.  Yep, a whole dozen eggs.

Jess, he called, raising his voice to carry into the other room.  You feel like French toast for supper?

What are you, insane?  Jesse walked out into the kitchen with his rolling, confident (almost cocky) stride.  He gave Dave a friendly swat on the stomach.  That sounds great!

Dave's mouth twitched into a smile.  I want to use up this bread.  It's going stale.  He held up the loaf.

Well, bring it on, cowboy.  Sounds great to me!

Dave snorted quietly under his breath and turned away to start cooking.  Jesse was a slender man with gray eyes, a handsome face, and dark, wavy hair.  He'd been even slimmer three years ago when they met.  He couldn't cook very well, and he had a fast metabolism.  Now Dave frequently cooked for both of them.  He enjoyed it, had learned from his mother when he was young.

For a time after he got back, cooking gave him a sense of mastery and worked almost like therapy, helping him take control of something and create something useful by himself.  Now he still enjoyed it but didn't need to do it the way he had at first.  Sometimes they ate
