      CHAPTER 1

      Identity Theft

      A crime with far reaching consequences

      Few things are as valuable and personal as one’s identity. When this identity has been stolen, there is a profound sense of loss and despair. It is, indeed, tragic that thieves have discovered ways to steal our identities and to misuse them to our serious disadvantage. It is often a long and painful process to get lives straightened out once the damage has been done. It is more tragic still when one goes through life without having established his or her true identity in the first place. Trying to cope with the complexities of life in contemporary society with a false identity is an unnecessary and painful experience. This book reveals what our true identity is, how to achieve it, and the blessings that flow from having established once and for all, who we really are.

      There is a concept in the Bible that while it might be technically true, might also be a major source of confusion; i.e., the two natures. When I first became a Christian, I was taught that there are two natures or identities, the old (often referred to as the Old Man), and the new nature, the born-again nature. When trying to establish one’s identity, I believe it is both true and wise to believe you are who Christ says you are, a born-again believer who now has the righteousness of Christ. This righteousness is a gift. Gifts are not earned; they are, simply put, given. To assume we have two identities simply confuses the issue, and makes room for rationalization, if not an outright excuse for our occasional bad behavior. Let’s avoid spiritual confusion and adopt the identity Christ gave us, Christ in us, the hope of glory. (Col. 1:27).

      Our true identity has been established from the beginning, but we don’t believe it. To believe is a work. In Isaiah 46:10, God declares the end and the result from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure and purpose. To understand that we are who God says we are takes time and effort.

      I spoke to a woman not long ago who was very tired and distraught from all her tasks (my observation). She said that she read her Bible, but couldn’t hear God’s voice. I asked her what she expected to hear from Him. The answer was, He would let her know how pleased He was with her work. All of us at times desire God’s appreciation, but if that is our main focus, we are off the track.

      As we continued our discussion, we talked about Ephesians 2:8-10, which teaches that we are saved by grace through faith. It is the gift of God; not of works. Developing our relationship with Him is His desire. Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Matt. 11:28). God brings us to Himself for a relationship. At length she finally understood that her labor to impress God was off track. She learned to let go and let God establish the relationship, and
