How to Have a Happier Writer Mindset Without Spending a Dime - Prasenjeet Kumar
Why am I writing this book?
Here I am, sitting in front of my computer, thinking of writing my fourth romance novel. My characters are eager to narrate their stories—of why they fell in love. Or why they had to abandon their homes—never to return again!
And so on.
At the same time, I feel another voice, ringing in my ears, which is growing stronger and stronger as the day passes. That voice is NOT coming from any of my characters. It’s a stranger’s voice.
A writer’s voice, actually.
I can’t help but sit up and listen to this voice. The writer tells me he wants to succeed as a writer. He sure wants to tell stories. But he also wants to entertain, educate and inspire people.
But there are forces in this world that want to stop him from writing. They make him feel he is not good enough. That he can never learn THE CRAFT on his own.
Simply that he’ll never be a great writer.
Other voices whisper that readers don’t care about his books. That he cannot market his books unless he throws around lots and lots of money.
Unrestrained and in gay abandon.
Sales prove the point, by hovering around zero for months, when he indie publishes. And if he tries traditional publishing, he only accumulates rejection letters that are so demoralising, depressing, degrading, demotivating, de... you get the drift.
The voice shakes me up from tip to toe. It moves me from within. Because it is none other than my own author voice.
It’s already December 2016 and we are nearing the end of the calendar year. I should, I think, look back and think how 2016 was.
Looks like, that like any other year, 2016 too was an emotional roller coaster ride, with significant highs and lows that were way bigger than either 2015 or 2014. There were moments when I was ecstatic.
Overall, in the first 8 months, I had made as much money as I had in 2015. If the year continues like this, I guess, I would make more money this year than 2013 + 2014 + 2015 combined.
I had been writing non-fiction for the past three years. In 2016, for the first time, I ventured into fiction and wrote my first three novels. Interestingly, I enjoyed the experience so much that I now believe I may have a career as a fiction writer as well.
Yet, I have felt depressed at times. Look at the paradox. I have never ever suffered from a writer’s block but this time I came quite close to let it envelop me. The reasons were many, and this book shall attempt to discuss those shortly.
There have been times when I even thought of quitting writing. But in the end, I came around because I couldn’t see myself doing anything else but writing. My happiest childhood memories were those when I used to write stories about cute, little animals. My happiest memories now come from the experience of writing novels.
As I have mentioned elsewhere, I came from a corporate law background. Like most people of my generation, I too once believed in leading an ordinary life, with a predictable 9-5 corporate day job, a fixed salary every month, socialising with colleagues, etc.
Guess I was wrong. So terribly wrong.
I was only fooling myself. A time came in my corporate career when I felt drained and empty. My health had started to deteriorate, and I was falling sick more often. Please note that I was only 26 years old then!
Then towards the end, I felt as if I was going to have a nervous breakdown. Luckily, I survived, and went on to detail those intense personal experiences in my book Quiet Phoenix: An Introvert’s Guide to Rising in Career & Life.
Writing thereafter became a mystical experience for me. This is how I now am. And will always be.
Because I love telling stories.
And because I love inspiring people through my words, to the extent I can.
Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.
–Mahatma Gandhi
Is this book right for me?
Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.
–Albert Schweitzer
No one can promise to turn you in to a best-selling author, so I wouldn’t even try.
BUT what I can definitely help you with is to make you a happier writer.
The only condition would be that you must love writing. You must, like me, love telling stories (fiction) or love sharing your ideas or How-To tips with the world (non-fiction).
If you meet just this one condition, then just go ahead and DO IT. Let no rules for writing fiction restrain you. Let no one force you to indulge in excessive workshop-ping
for learning how to write.
And of course, let no publisher or literary agent break your spirit by burying you with rejection letters.
If you have already had some encounters of the first kind with any of the above, then certainly, this book is for you.
To recap, the first task for you is to write. Because, without writing, you cannot succeed as a writer.
This book is aimed at exorcising those demons that make you unhappy, desperate, and despondent. You have to pull yourself from the bootstraps and force you to smile regardless of what has befallen you. Because without happiness from within, your creative voice will fade away and even die.
And if your creative voice does not cooperate with you, how else will you tell a story? And without telling a story, how can you ever expect readers to discover your story? As you can see, it all can be quite a vicious cycle.
This book aims to break that vicious cycle.
So if you wish to be a happier writer, read the next chapter.
Part I–On Writing
Chapter 1: Why write when readers don’t care?
Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life.
–Omar Khayyam
The other day I was reading The INFJ Writer: Cracking the Creative Genius of the World’s Rarest Type. In the book, the author describes hearing a very strong voice inside her head saying, again and again, I need to explain why I killed my father.
She didn’t know the voice’s name or anything about his background. But she couldn’t just ignore it. Meanwhile, the voice grew stronger and stronger till
