    Omega's Passion - Kellan Larkin

    1

    Mark

Part of me thought that I was lucky to have that one thing I was passionate about. In high school, many of my friends struggled to find even one hobby or school subject that they wanted to focus on. But ever since I was a pup, I’ve loved soccer. I’m too realistic to try for a career as a professional athlete, of course, but when I’m not doing my homework, I’m dreaming about being on the field.

That was why it was about time I tried out for the Wolff College team. I hadn’t been able to join it my first two years here because I had to help out at home. My little sister was sick and my dad got laid off—bad luck all around for my family. It was all I could do to stay afloat in my classes. Soccer had to go on the backburner.

But now, Emily’s cancer was in remission and my dad had found a new job. Things weren’t quite like they were before, but we were recovering and healing, all of us. And for me, that meant I had to get on the Wolff College team. I knew I was good enough, and even if I didn’t have the most skill, I had passion. That counted for something,

    didn’t

    it

    ?

Wolff College was a small liberal arts school, so it wasn’t like it had a great sports program. But its soccer team did pretty well against all the other schools in the league, so it was a good team to play for. Because there was a high shifter population, the team had an advantage—shifters were just a little stronger and faster than regular humans. We were all hush-hush about it, of course—we didn’t think humans would take well to learning that there were werewolves in their midst.

It was time for me to head out to the field for tryouts. I was nervous, but I felt like I had a good shot. After all, I had been playing since I was seven years old. I had been on travel teams in middle and high school and so I had a lot of experience. I just had to try my best and believe in myself. As cheesy as it sounded, that was the advice that had gotten me

    this

    far

    .

It looked like the current team was sitting in the bleachers. I scanned their faces; I knew all of them already because I had been keeping up with the team since I got here. There were a few Alphas on the team. To be honest, I was surprised they worked together so well; young adult Alphas could be hotheaded. But then the coach, Randall Lazurri, was a good one. He was probably able to keep them

    in

    line

    .

Nice to see you, Mark, said Coach Lazurri. "We’re looking forward to seeing you in action. If you could come join us in the first

    row

    here

    …"

Some of the other people here to try out were doing stretches, so I set my stuff down and joined them, taking it as a chance to calm

    myself

    down

    .

I was distracted by the gaze of one particular Alpha, though. I recognized him—his name was Kasimir, Kas for short—and he looked kind of like an asshole. I wasn’t usually one to judge people so quickly, but I had seen him around campus, and he always had that telltale swagger.

Well, at least he was hot. It was always nice to have some eye candy around. I wondered if the Alphas thought the same of me, since I was an Omega. My lighter, leaner body would be appealing to them, just like how their stockier forms would be more appealing to me. It was just the way it worked.

Okay, everyone, are you ready? called out Coach Lazurri.

We turned to face him as he explained how the tryouts were going to go. Thankfully, I wasn’t going first. I’d be able to see what the competition was like and see what Coach Lazurri’s style of appraisal was. I was determined to nail this audition.

It became increasingly obvious that the other students were simply not as good as I was. This made me feel a little better—the odds were in my favor. Of course, there was the chance that someone who went after me would be ridiculously good,
