This course also examines current technology enhancements, and benefits that are advancing how content creators build for virtual reality.
I hope you enjoy this eBook tips for Virtual Reality developers.
What to know
A working knowledge, familiarity and experience with virtual reality concepts and 3D content creation tools is recommended, but not completely necessary. A general working knowledge of 3D software packages is quite helpful for understanding navigation basics and the underlying principles and workflows behind 3D software.
It should be noted that a virtual reality head mounted display is not required. Although it's a lot more fun if you have one. The idea with this book is to provide you with a very solid foundation of the requirements for effective content creation for virtual reality. Enjoy!
Technology has allowed for a rapid expansion and branching off of different altered experiences. These simulated realities can be defined in three basic ways: virtual, augmented and mixed.
What is HMD?
First let's define the basic device. HMDs or head mounted displays, these are typically stereoscopic screens to immerse a viewer in a simulated or an altered world. Many are now packaged with handheld controllers to allow interaction with simulated or altered environments.
Display Technology
The display is the most prominent part of the HMD, so it stands to reason that we would start here, in the visual center of the device. Today, an HMD might use one of the several techniques to transfer images to the brain, but the most common are the use of liquid crystals. Sounds painful, right? This is more commonly known as an LCD panel, the same type of panel used in smartphones, modern televisions, and computer monitors. A newcomer to the display technology game is OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode), which we are beginning to see more and more of already.
Pixels and displays
Pixels (short for pixel elements) are the
