      Introduction

      No Man’s Sky is, at its heart, a game about exploration, and the wondrous yet frightening discovery of just how small you are. Its systems are built to encourage this discovery on every level, from logging new plant species to new planets. Its much-hyped procedurally generated universe is designed to make you feel overwhelmed, but just like our universe; it obeys its own laws.

      What to do First

      There are a few things you'll want to do right off the bat in No Man's Sky to give yourself the best shot at a good start and smooth early game.

      Check your surroundings

      Whilst No Man's Sky will seemingly always spawn you on a planet which actually has the resources required to let you fix your ship and leave, there's no guarantee that planet will be particularly hospitable. Our first spawn involved a -72 degree Celsius temperature, plus a spot of background toxicity. Rather than save-summing your way out and hitting the restart button, you can quite easily face the challenge - so long as you don't go bounding into the wild unprepared, which will be tempting. Take a moment to assess the environment, keep an eye on any meters in the bottom left of your HUD - such as temperature control or toxicity - and figure out what resources are needed, such as Zinc or Carbon, for regulating temperature, toxicity, and life-support.
