Chapter One: About Little Brother
Little Brother
by Cory Doctorow was first released on 29th April 2008. The book became very popular soon after its publication. It soon got included in the New York Times Best Seller List for Children’s Chapter Books.
The book is the winner of several awards around the world. It was the winner of White Pine Award, John W. Campbell Memorial Award, and Prometheus Award in 2009.
The story revolves around four teenagers in San Francisco. A terrorist attack takes place on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and BART system. The story describes how these four teenagers defend themselves against the Department of Homeland Security’s attacks on the Bill of Rights.
At the end of the novel, there are two afterword essays by Bruce Schneier, a cryptographer and computer security specialist, and Andrew Huang, a hacker.
It is noticeable that in spite of so much success, the author did not think of earning millions or probably billions of dollars by selling millions of copies.
The author has made this book available free on his website. It can be downloaded both in text and audio version. The author has made it free under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial-ShareAlike license. People are free to download and remix the book, but they can’t sell the end product.
It is also noticeable that this book changed the lives of many of its readers, and even it changed Google, thus establishing that the book is responsible for changing the lives of most people on earth.
A high school in Florida did challenge the book in 2014, but it has never been banned anywhere around the world.
Chapter Two: Plot Overview
As the story begins, we are introduced to Marcus Yallow. He is a seventeen years old techno whiz, to be more precise, a hacker, from San Francisco.
One day, Frederick Benson, the vice Principal of Caesar Chavez High School accuses Marcus of hacking into the school. It becomes obvious that Marcus and the vice Principal do not get along well. Marcus believes that Benson has been continually trying to get rid of him. However, since there is no evidence against the boy, he is let go.
Darryl is Marcus’s best friend. Later that day, both of them escape school to go to play a huge mixed reality role game which also has a scavenger hunt around town as its part. They meet the other members of their group and the game players Vanessa and Jolu.
While they are searching for a part of the game, several explosions take place in the city. People begin to run for the shelters and the sounds of sirens and alarms are heard everywhere. The boys try to go to the shelter, but then they decide to leave.
They have to run with the crowd. Unfortunately, Darryl is stabbed in the crowd. Finally, they are able to go away from the crowd. They stop a vehicle because Darryl must be given immediate medical assistance.
The vehicle stops and three men get out. They put bags over the heads of the each group member and then push them into their vehicle. The boys are not even able to resist.
Marcus and his friends are brought to an unknown location. Then they are put into a trailer. There are several other people there. They boys are separated there. Marcus and his friends learn that they are being held by the Department of Homeland Security. DHS people are going to interrogate them to find whether they have any connection with the terrorist attack.
For the following six days, they are interrogated several times. Eventually, Marcus, Jolu, and Vanessa are released. They do not know where Darryl is. Marcus is warned by the DHS that his activities and moves will be monitored because he is not out of suspicion. Marcus is obviously furious because his civil rights are being restricted or ignored.
Filled with anger and sense of revenge, Marcus begins technological attacks on the DHS to stop them from further restricting people’s personal liberty. Marcus makes a game console and sets up a network of teenagers.
