Jacob Have I Loved
by Katherine Paterson was first published in 1980. It soon became a very popular children’s novel. The book won the Newberry Medal in 1981. The title of the novel is inspired by the Biblical story that presents the rivalry between the siblings Jacob and Esau.
The story primarily revolves around a family, the Bradshaws, who are dependent on the father of the family, Truitt Bradshaw. He has a crabbing and fishing business. His fishing boat is called ‘The Portia Sue."
Truitt has two daughters Sara Louise and Caroline. They are twins. However, Caroline has always been the father’s favourite. She is more beautiful than her sister and she is more talented. Her parents and even the people in their community pay more attention to Caroline.
Louise is compelled to live under the shadow of her more talented and prettier sister. The novel describes how she tries to free herself as she grows into adulthood. The author once mentioned that she was inspired to write this novel thinking about the adults who continue to carry on with their childhood jealousies.
This very well written novel is not only interesting and absorbing, but also highly informative and enlightening. Although it is generally called a children’s novel, it has more to offer to its adult readers.
Chapter Two: Plot Overview
As the story begins, we are introduced to twin sisters Sara Louise Bradshaw and her sister Caroline. The sisters were born on Rass Island.
Louise is thirteen years old in the summer of 1941. Call is her best friend. However, Call never laughs at Louise’s jokes. Louise’s grandmother loves to quite vicious Bible verses to the people who are ready to listen to her.
Caroline, Louise’s twin sister, is quite different. She does everything very systematically and beautifully. She is able to be at the centre of everything and she steals the spotlight from Louise.
Since she is prettier and more talented she has been gaining attention from everyone in family and outside family. In fact, she has been getting all the attention since her birth because she nearly died whereas Louise was quite healthy at the time of their birth.
One day, a mysterious older man visits the town. Louise and her best friend Call befriend him. They attempt to know about all his strange secrets about his past. Everything is ruined when Caroline enters the scene and makes friends with that older man. The children call him the Captain. Caroline wins his friendship by helping him get rid of some old house cats.
Louise does not want to live in Rass Island. She dreams of running away from there, but it is Caroline who gets the chance to leave the island. The Captain offers to pay for her fees at a private music school in Baltimore.
Call also leaves Rass Island to join the Navy and to fight in the Second World War. Now, Louise is left behind with her father. She helps him on his crab and fishing
