Chapter One: Introduction
The BFG
stands for Big Friendly Giant.
This children’s novel written by Roald Dahl was first published in 1982. The book is illustrated by Quentin Blake.
The author had initially written it as a short story in his book Danny, the Champion of the World,
but he later expanded it and got it published it as an illustrated book for children.
The author dedicated The BFG
to his late daughter, Olivia. The author’s daughter had died of measles in 1962 when she was only seven years old. Up to this day, more than 4 million copies of the book have been sold in the United Kingdom alone.
The book was adapted for an animated television movie in 1989. It was also adapted for stage.
The story primarily revolves around a young girl name Sophie. She happens to be living in an orphanage. The headmistress of the orphanage is a mean woman.
One night, Sophie is in her bed but she is awake. Suddenly, she sees the Big Friendly Giant coming down the road. The BFG is giving children dreams.
The BFG takes Sophie away to the land of the giants. There are many other giants, but the BFG helps her so that she is not eaten by the other giants who are not as kind as the BFG is. The other giants are quite nasty and cruel, and they eat children.
Sophie is able to subdue them with her wit and stops them when they are ready to go to eat the Queen of England. The BFG helps Sophie in her attempt. The giants are captured and the story ends on a happy note.
The BFG adopts Sophie at the end of the story
