    Winter Tales - T.M. Mendes

    ©TMMendes 2015

I winced as the floorboard beneath my foot creaked. I swear the only reason Zach had not replaced this old floor was so I could get caught in it half the time! I strained to listen if that little noise gave away what I was doing. So far, all was quiet as most of the castle workers left earlier so they could celebrate Christmas with their families.

The long stretch of hallway before me was decorated with beautiful Christmas lights, which certainly helped me see where I was going. I swallowed a surprised squeak as my hand flew to my very large stomach. I playfully scowled down at my growing daughter.

Rest, you. Mommy can’t concentrate if you’re kicking up a storm. I whispered with a loving smile. I would teach her everything I knew once she was old enough.

Charlie wasn’t quite old enough to come along with me. I loved him, but he’d give us away in a heartbeat. I guess he still had not mastered the being quiet part.

Suddenly, I heard footsteps. Crap, I muttered and quickly waddled behind the wall. I peeked around the corner and saw Missy wearily heading back to bed from one of the bathrooms. Blowing out a quiet breath of relief, I waddled on.

This mission was dire, I had to complete it. It had been a tradition of mine since I was old enough to scheme. But something was even more pressing right now... like how my bladder was being used as a squeeze toy. Baby-girl, you make me have to pee every five minutes! She was due next month, so I understood she was running out of room in there.

I had to waddle quickly to the bathroom Missy just came out of. Relieving myself never felt so amazing. Then, my stomach growled as I craved a peanut butter and pickle sandwich. It sounded gross, I know. But it was actually quite a popular sandwich during the Great Depression in the United States. I couldn’t stop to eat right now though. I needed to finish what I started.

After washing my hands, I silently walked back out to the hall. I smiled as I looked at all the decorations. I loved this time of year. I even started singing Christmas songs in September! It drove my friends and family crazy. But no one, and I mean no one, could stop me from playing my Michael Buble Christmas CD!

    Red, what are you doing?

I squeaked and turned around. Dem was standing there with his arms crossed and a stupid smirk on his face. With a hand to my rapidly beating heart, I glared and shushed him. Dang it! So close! Maybe I could lie my way out of this?

I was just going to make myself a sandwich, I replied innocently. He snorted and shook his head.

Nice try. I’ve been watching you slink around this hallway since Missy came out and went back to bed.

I quirked an eyebrow. Why are you out of bed? I asked, trying to distract him.

    I had to pee. Now...

Wait, you and Missy had to go at the same time? Aw, are your bladders now in sync? That’s so cute! I gushed with a quiet laugh. No need to wake anyone else up. He scowled down at me.

We are not in sync! And even if we were, you’re just jealous that you and Zach don’t have to pee at the same time.

I gave him a look that said Really?

So just stop trying to distract me and tell me why you’re really out here.

I sighed and inwardly debated whether or not I should pretend I was simply sleepwalking the entire time, (not a solid plan, but a plan nonetheless) or just come clean and hope he would want to join me. I chose the latter.

A slow smile appeared on Dem’s face as I told him the real reason I was out of bed so late at night.

Oh, I am so in! Let’s do this!

I shushed him again and told him to follow. I mean, honestly! You’d think he never snuck around before!

Hey, have you thought of a name yet? She’s going to pop out soon, and I doubt you want her to be named ‘Jelly Bean’ as Charlie says, he asked quietly.

I sighed and shook my head while rubbing my stomach.

No, and it’s driving me crazy! Nothing seems to fit. Zach and I agreed we will know once we see her, which should be any day now. I’ve been through every baby name book and even looked for hours online, but nothing sounded right.

I told you, you should name her Elma! he said with a chuckle as I made a disgusted face.

I’m giving birth to a ‘baby’... not a grandma. We were almost where I needed to be. Once we rounded the corner I felt a conspiratorial grin stretch across my face. If I could produce an evil laugh right now without getting the urge to pee, I would.

So you’ve done this for the past handful of years? Dem asked with a quirked eyebrow.

I crossed my arms and gave him a smirk. Always. And I’ve never been caught...

I caught you, he interrupted, which made me send him a little glare.

... because I know how to make them appeared untouched, I finished with a satisfied nod and waddled my way over. Maybe it was a good thing Dem was with me. This way I didn’t have to bend over, because more than likely, I would topple over if I did. This was my night, the one night I look forward to every year without fail!

    Opening up all my presents.

Feeling relieved, I propped my feet up as I sat down on the large couch near the tree with its beautiful decoration—lights, ornaments, and all. Dem sat on the ground next to the presents. There were quite a bit since there were so many people staying here at the moment. Missy, Danny, my Mom, of course my little family, and Zach’s family.

Okay, you should feel incredibly privileged that you are allowed to take part in this tradition of mine, I started, looking down at him with a pseudo haughty look.

He chuckled and quickly plucked a small present with my name
