Sticky Fingers - Nic Starr
Chapter ONE
Hey! What the fuck are you doing?
The words fell from Jeff’s mouth as he shoved the screen door open. The sound of it slamming against the wall of the house was loud in the quiet backyard. He thrust out a hand and stopped the door on its rebound before heading down the back steps.
He’d just arrived after a tiring three-hour drive from Sydney, and he really didn’t need this shit. He needed to find something to eat and maybe take a walk to stretch and get the kinks out before getting stuck into some chores. Instead he raised his voice and called again as he started across the yard. I said ‘what are you doing?’
The guy had turned around, either at the sound of the door or at Jeff’s shout, with a broad smile on his handsome face. Jeff’s breath caught and his step faltered for a moment, but he forced his legs to work and took the last few paces across the lawn. He stared at the man whose smile lit up his whole face, bright blue eyes crinkling at the corners.
The dude raised a hand in greeting, offering a half wave. Oh, hello. You must be Jeff. It’s great to meet you.
He bent and put the grocery bag he was holding on the ground before offering Jeff his hand.
Jeff stood like a stunned mullet as his hand was enclosed in the warmth of a friendly handshake. I…ah…
he started.
You have no idea who I am, do you?
The guy chuckled. Danny Franco. I’m a friend of your grandfather’s.
Jeff drew a blank. Why would Grandad be friends with someone around fifty years younger? He slowly shook his head.
From over the back fence.
Danny jerked a thumb towards the old paling fence separating Jeff’s grandfather’s place and the rambling homestead next door.
Oh,
Jeff said, suddenly feeling stupid. He felt even more ridiculous when he realised he was still holding firmly onto the guy’s hand. Jeff immediately let go and wiped his damp palm on his jeans. I mean, yeah, I think I’ve heard of you. Daniel, right?
Uh-huh. But I prefer Danny, at least to my friends.
He smiled again. And I have a feeling we’re going to be friends.
Jeff warmed at the thought. There was something appealing about the outgoing man in front of him, something that made Jeff want to get to know him better. You do, do you? You know we’re going to be friends?
Jeff asked, but there was a smile in his voice as he said it.
Oh, definitely. I feel like I know you already. You should hear the things Charles has to say about you.
Danny chuckled, and Jeff could feel the heat rise in his cheeks
