About this ebook

The 'Search for Faith' is the sequel to 'The Roads to Mangere,' and takes the reader on a journey with a nurse and a young man who is searching for his identity. The story portrays life in the swinging 60’s and 70’s and the social and sexual revolution that released the youth from post-World War 2 conventional life. Unfortunately so many of them were carried along with the changing times, with limited knowledge of sex education and contraception, which were unavailable to the single girl. Many fell victim to the persuasions of a boyfriend or a casual acquaintance which often resulted in an unexpected pregnancy. Some families supported their daughter, but others sent the pregnant girl away so as not to bring shame on the family. So many young mothers had their babies taken from them, and others, who without financial or family support had no alternative but to relinquish their child for adoption. This had long-term effects on these women and their children. During the time of the Vietnam war attitudes in New Zealand and Australia changed towards such conflicts and the slogan make love, not war rang out amongst the emerging hippy culture as sex before marriage became more acceptable in society. Recreational drugs although illegal became more accessible and the use of marijuana often led to other drugs and drug addiction. As laws changed and information became more available adults who had been adopted as children began to look for their real identity and some birth mothers began to search for their children. The introduction of computers and the internet made this task so much easier. Some found their children and others found their birth mothers and fathers. The world has changed so much since 1960 and in this book the author attempts to explain how the changes effected some of the children who grew up in the 1940's and 50's.

I started nursing training in 1960 in New Zealand, along with many other young ladies most of whom had to choose between nursing and school teaching. University education was too expensive for most families and not many girls went as we were expected to marry, and have lots of babies. It was an amazing time to be young, with so much wonderful music and the emerging social and sexual revolution. However, we were sadly lacking in education and contraception. I eventually married and we moved to Australia. For the next few years we moved around and I nursed part time while rearing our two sons. In 1993 I left nursing and we moved to the beautiful Sunshine Coast and I worked for the next 18 years for a community organisation. We now live in a lovely rural area with our three rescue dogs, two old cockatoos a galah and a variety of breeds of chooks. We also have a couple of carpet pythons around who keep the rat and mice population under control. We are lucky to have an excellent U3A organisation on the coast and I attend a writing group where we learn the basics of writing, editing, and publishing. Writing is an amazing hobby and I have met some great people who have some very interesting stories to tell.
