Victoria longs for this to be a loving marriage but Mr. Black just wants peace and quiet.
One day, a disaster befalls Victoria and Mr. Black realizes what a gem of a wife he has. Is it too late for him to woo his bride? Has her good nature and trusting ways been tried too many times by his bullying manner? Will they find a way to have happiness or will tragedy break them apart?

Chapter 1
v
Nashville, Tennessee. 1874
Victoria and Caroline were walking down the gravel road playing kick the rock. Caroline would kick the rock, and then Victoria would try to kick it farther. They were discussing the advertisement they saw in the morning Tennessee Gazette:
MAIL ORDER BRIDE WANTED: MUST BE ABLE TO COOK AND ENTERTAIN. REPLY TO DENVER TIMES.
Victoria asked, I wonder what he meant by
entertain. Did he mean you need to be able to sing? I can do that, and cook.
Caroline answered, I don't have the foggiest idea. I would guess singing, too.
Victoria announced, I'm going to answer that advertisement. I want a husband like Amanda got.
Well, I doubt this man is a doctor, like Charles,
replied Caroline. But I guess he's the hungry sort, wanting cooking and entertaining.
But why would he want singing with his supper, I don't fancy that at all,
responded Victoria.
Denver, Colorado, 1874
Robert Black, of Black's Exclusive Emporium, walked down the sidewalk and into his showplace store. He walked through the front of the store, eyeing the displays for neatness and looking for the best merchandise to be at the forefront. He expected his store to be neat and tidy, just like himself. Even though he was a slightly rounded man, he was dressed exquisitely in a dapper three-piece suit, with a watch fob, a cane, and a matching hat and spats. He was always turned out well, for he believed he should exemplify the best of his store's ability to dress for success. He wore a hat to cover his balding head, but most people thought it was to finish
his look.
He was carrying his mail from the post office. He was disappointed in the responses to his advertisement, as most women seemed to think he just wanted them for a cook and parlor maid. He did want a companion, but his ad was quite abrupt. He was just thinking about changing the advertisement when he began opening his letters.
Here was one from Nashville, Tennessee. This was a possibility.
Dear Sir:
I cook and entertain eleven people every night. I can sing right well. I would like to be your bride.
Sincerely,
Victoria Thompson
Robert leaned back in his office chair as he pondered the letter from Victoria. I wonder why she told me she could sing? He mused. Eleven people is an odd number for a dinner party, she must mean twelve including herself, he thought.
He quickly penned her a response.
Dear Victoria,
Enclosed is a rail ticket from West Memphis to Denver. Do not worry about packing lots of clothing, as I will supply your fashion needs. I look forward to meeting and marrying you.
Sincerely,
Robert Black
Chapter 2
Nashville, Tennessee
Victoria and Caroline rode the wagon to town to check the mail and trade the eggs for sugar and staples they couldn't harvest at home. Pa needed some nails, Ma wanted some muslin for underwear, and Victoria and Caroline wanted a letter back from Denver.
Victoria and Caroline were as alike as two peas in a pod. Both had dark hair and eyes like their older sister, Amanda. Both had rounder figures, which they
